Default Advice for British Costal Waters campagin

Just wanted to pick the brain of some more experienced players, currently going up against the British in the coastal waters campaign.

1) I've been running with the steam torpedoes as they seem more reliable....should i be carrying the electrics or a combination?

2) Do i upgrade the hydrophone (my initial choice) or do i go for one of the tiger stripe cammo schemes to break up my silhouette?

That aside what tactics do you guys feel work best for you? I feel that i've been consistently spooted well beyond battery range from the coast.

I usually have 1/3 of loadout as electrics to minimize bubble trail especially during day attacks.

Upgrade the hydrophone equipment.

Thanks, that's what i figured. Still not finding very many freighters during my patrol. I sunk two little ones (the 90 tonners) and a fishing vessel with my deck gun. My only other luck is creeping into harbors and taking out moored tankers and such which is exceedingly risky.

Go for a sonar upgrade. Plot a patrol course and submerge every hour or so. Stay submerged a few minutes for a sonar sweep. You can detect ships over a greater distance when submerged. The sonar always has a better range than a visual scan. If you detect a ship or convoy with the sonar, you will have plenty of time to plot an attack with pin-point accuracy.

Also, from my experience, the cammo is more useful if you go up against war ships, not merchants. I tried sneaking in the middle of an escort to sink a carrier, but one of the destroyers spotted me. I didn't have the cammo at the time, but I think it would have helped.

As for the torpedoes, each type has its own advantage and disadvantage. Steam torps are more reliable, but they can be spotted on their way to the target.

Thanks for the thoughts SDA. So far I've managed to wiggle into two harbors and take down 4 tankers and two medium freighters. I also took out a fishing vessel and a few of those 90 ton coastal freighters. I only ran into two merchants steaming alone about 100 km off the British coast. Only had my aft left so i took them both out with my deck gun.

I know. Same here in a simulation and probably in RL, too. Did the same on this mission and others going into harbors.

Once you get the required tonnage sunk for British Coastal Waters and start the British Supply missions, let me know if you get any missions. With my lastest install I get no missions in October and November of 39 for British Supply. So I've been going out with no mission and sinking whatever I can find. Note tho that I'm using the reduced tonnage required mod.

and thus will get no fishing boats or any other unit added by OHII (that's if you have OHII loaded)

I can do without the fishing boats. I always felt the stock tonnage required was a bit over the top.

Now if OHII could incorporate a lower tonnage required that would be good, unless it's already added and I'm running the Lower Tonnage mod for no reason.
