Having trouble with torpedoes

this question is probably THE most asked question here and probably the question with the most discussions and no definite solution. I need this. I keep missing my torpedoes and if i hit, i am not able to destroy a ship with a single one. i end up using 10 torpedoes for a single ship. what i would like is an easy explanation for absolute beginners with all the details explaining different cases and situations so it gets through to me. i would greatly appreciate any help.
