Good games for laptops

So I am now relegated to a laptop for most of my PC work and fun. I can tell that AOK HD is laggy as hell, probably because I am now playing on a laptop. I'm guessing Minecraft won't load for the same reason.

Just for fun, what are some of your favorite games you can play on your laptop (besides Solitare)?

I realize a lot depends on CPU and G-card, so if you don't mind including that info....I'm trying to find out my laptop's specs but Windows 7 has made it hard to find the System info.

On my laptop I have installed SH3 + GWX3 and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 and 2, and that's I can say is well that it is capable of it, had previously H.A.W.X and then lagged it some .. so I think it is best and use the desktop for more complex games, then the graphics are so intense

On my laptop i use most of my games, like SH5, X-plane, IL-2 1946, etc.
I plug it to a monitor, mouse and keyboard. It just depends on the laptop, which in my case, is for gaming (a little old; core 2 duo processor, Nvidia GTX260, and 6GB of Ram).

On your Computer, most likely you still could run games like SH3, Age of pirates, oblivion. (and any other game released around 2006). Still fun to play those!

It's like the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe but with a ton of user made addons which include new vehicles, new graphics, and so on. A very good freeware Cold War real time tactical wargame, I haven't played it in a while, but it's constantly being updated and has a good team behind it. Worth checking out if you're into the genre.

Tough one to master this, hex turned based wargame, a classic, and comes in several flavours, Axis, Allies and World War One.

All of these three will probably run on any laptop made after 2004.

Virtual Pool 4. One of my absolute favourites. Brilliant in looks and realism, and benchmark title of the matter. In all regards: superb, superb, superb. Since release, online play was made available now, I think. The specs demanded are lower than your CPU, but GPU I do not know. You may want to try their free demo first. Virtual Pool 3 also is still available, with lower demands. It's the second best pool simulation on the market now. What you know from live play you can use in this sim, what you learn in this sim you can use in real pool playing. Tables can be set up to your liking and skill. Pool variants, Snooker, Carambolage. You play the mouse like you play the stick! No clicking for strength on a scale and then hitting a shoot-button.

I thought I would be the only one to ever ask this...

It's really hit and miss with games for me. The GPU req for a game could say 512Mb and I can run it with a 64Mb....

There's a lot of games out there that are fun. Steam and GoG are good places to look.

Also check a game at Steam called "Miasmata", I almost bought it myself, but you know - me and Steam...

Check the specs, however, dual core seems to be okay, but the gfx card - I know nothiong about mobile cards, so see yourself.

It costs 3.50 € currently only. Indie game. Sounds as if it has a special atmosphere.

On the whole, my laptop is probably a weak sister for games, I guess. No dedicated G-card, several years old. When I bought it, it was mainly for web surfing and working on the site away from my powerhouse home PC (which is getting old too, now).

I guess at some point, maybe a new laptop is in order. But I would like to go back to Win XP. Win 7 does not seem to offer any tangible benefits over XP. I have noticed startups take longer and longer, just like they do with XP after a period of time.

A bad idea, Neal. Microsoft's XP support ends in early April 2014 - no security updates beyond that anymore. Also, security-wise W7 is much better than XP. Some months ago I posted it in the forum somewehre. While W7 had overtaken market shares of XP then, it nevertheless had just one third or even less of XP's accumulated security issues. XP is no option anymore.

That an installation becomes slower over time, is normal, comparing to collecting digital dust. You can delay the process with good maintenance, but you cannot prevent it.

Use CCleaner after every day's work. Check its options carefully, and let it delete as much as is fine for your needs.

I calculate a new installation (manual or from image) every 18 months, +/- 3 or so.

I recommend to avoid W8 and XP and Vista, and stay with W7, while keeping an eye over the coming two years how W9 unfolds. If they do not mess it up again, W9 maybe will be the last Microsoft OS that I buy (after that they want to go cloud exclusively, and I do not intend to follow them on that trail.

Should you buy a new laptop? Then I would bet on a Mac, which is in my opinion a considerable faster computer.

Try the old Battlefield games and older Tom Clancy games.

Stuff for XP is pretty much discontinued though. 7 has the ability to run compatibility mode on applications so that you can run something as XP would run it.
