Default Just a few quick questions from a new SH series newbie

Hey Guys,

I want to thank and compliment everyone here as this has been a huge resource for me today. I purchased the amazon version of SH5 (based on your recommendations) and started looking at mods. I have the mod installer operating fine but was running into an issue.

I looked at a few lists of recommended mods, downloaded them and installed them with the installer utility in the order they were listed. However, i noticed that as i installed certain mods (like dynamic environment and the FX update) i received warnings about overwriting files. I chose not to overwrite the files because i didn't want to cause any issues. I my question really is can you overwrite files that are previously used or modified by a mod installed above it?

As a workaround i decided to install the wolves of steel mega mod. Is that a sufficient workaround or is it better to cherry pick what you want (i guess another reason the mega mod is attractive is because it is a bit dizzying going through all the various mods available as a newcomer).

Any advice or thoughts would be more than appreciated. Thank you again for all the knowledge here!

Rush

I think you have chosen the best route with that new mega mod. I have been messing with mods for many years and even I have resorted to using that new mod because.. well, its just much much easier and it contains pretty much everything you need to make Silent Hunter 5 great.

I appreciate the reply Cherbert. I still feel quite overwhelmed even with the wolves of steel. I can't seem to get the TDW patcher ever working properly (despite reading the guides).

That said, when i did have it running the immersion was great but i couldn't manage to cobble together a firing solution that would actually hit a target. Might me just a bit too hardcore for a complete franchise newbie.

At this point i think I'm just going to choose some of the environment / graphic related mods and go from there. *shrug*

There are times when one mod will ask to overwrite other mod files. It's ok as long as you know which re ok to overwrite. Usually the person that makes a mod will tell you if overwriting is ok or not. But most of the time it can be a hard decision to make on your own. It's a daunting task at times....especially if you're new to Sh5 or have been away for some time.

Once you get the mods you want make sure you go into JSGME/Tasks and make a mep file so you can use it to reinstall the mods you have automatically. And print it out too. You can also move mods around in the mep file to different places in the list. All will be loaded just as they are in the order of the mep file list.... top to bottom.

I took to rolling my own combos of simple mods, in sh 4 I have a mod that adds a nomograpgh to the nab map, another that makes the medals real navy medals, and another that adds a green filter to the observation scope.

These gave that same warning, and always for the same file. With a bit of examination I realized that each one had taken the "stock" version of that file (menu_1024_748.INI) and added or edited something.

So I made a combined copy of all the other files in each mod, and then edited my own inini to have the changes of each mods INI. Theresult was all of the mods happily coexsisting.

Of course this could take some experimentation to pull off depending on the mods, and as they say YMMV.

I think the biggest issue is that i don't even understand what I'm doing with these patchers and such. It's all very complicated and much different than modding other games such that are based on more popular engines (ARMA, Quake, Unreal, Source, Etc).

That's the biggest struggle, i want to figure out what I'm actually doing and modifying and what it means so if and when it goes wrong i can trouble shoot it.

When you have worked out how to install mods once , it is easy from there .
