Default Got refit; lost gun crew

It's been written about before but the known SH4 switching gun position/ losing crew bug, as I understand it, was supposed to be fixed in TMO 2.5 by not allowing the player a choice. Depending on what class of sub you were in, you were stuck w/ the existing fwd/aft posit.

What happened to me last night in my TAMBOR, TROUT, was we got a refit at the end of patrol and wham, no gun crew slots. It wasn't that I picked to switch. After the refit screen, the label on the gun crew box read Aft Gun Crew, but the slots were gone and there were no slots for a fwd gun crew which is where the refit located a 3"/50. Prior to refit I had a 5"/51 aft; that's gone, replaced by a 20mm.

We also lost all of our electronics upgrades which had to be repurchased.

I read a thread whereby you can do some manipulation in the pre-refit save and not have the refit occur whereby you lose the cut down tower. However, I want the cut down tower.

Is there a way of going into the save's ActiveUserPlayerUnit file and switching the location of the post refit gun to aft? Will it then pick up the old crew slots?

I could just put up w/ it until I get offered a better boat, but the original TROUT was lost in APR '44 and I was hoping to get this one thru the war.

Appreciate any assistance.

To my knowledge the Tambor Bug has never been fixed by any mod but there are manual ways over working around it.

There is a post by someone with a good manual work around but I do not member who posted it or the thread title. It should be a sticky in my opinion.

This thread is from '09 and talks about getting crew for the second 5"/25 you can get in BALAO & TENCH Class boats.

However, I tried what's suggested about deleting the phrase "Additional Repository" where appearing in the crewmember stations assigned as gun crew slots and it worked. TROUT now has a fwd deck gun and slots for the crew.

There's another thread dating from like '07 that talks about how to move the deck gun back, but that looked to be beyond my feeble skills.

I just test drove this fix and it works altho testing the guns revealed another very strange aspect of what this refit did. According to the picture of TROUT on the systems screen, she still has her 5"/51 aft, a 40mm on the fwd conning tower extention and a twin 20mm on the cigarette deck aft.

The crew screen tho, shows crew slots for the fwd 4"/50 (which I changed fm the 3"/50), the 40mm and two 20mm. When I got u/w for the sea trial, I filled all the gunner slots, test fired the guns and all was well, kind of. When I took a target under fire on our stbd beam, the twin cylindrical magazines of a 20mm gun obscured our sight picture for the 4"/50. I went to external view and sure enuf, behind the base of the four inch mount you can see two tripod legs for a 20mm mount. So somehow the yardbirds at Midway figured out how to mount a 4"/50 atop a 20mm and have them share the same space while still remaining functional. Some trick. So the only degradation is you can't engage targets abaft the beam w/ the 4". I didn't test that 20mm, I'll never man it.

In any case, TROUT has her gun battery back.

There is another thread concerning the bug for saved games. It was a way to take all the current information about medals, reknown, rank and tonnage and transfer it over to a new career so you could pick up where you left off after the corrupt save.
