One nice thing about being in the military is being exposed to people very different from you. I found, over the years, that families have different traditions that take place on New Year's Day.
In my family, we ate herring on New Year's Day, supposedly because it brings good luck during the following year. What are some of the New Year's Day traditions (preferably ones that are not related to hangovers)

For a very long time now my tradition has been to pretend it's not happening. On the other hand I find it fun to complain a lot.

Every New Years we serve a Maine lobster dinner with all the traditional sides as my bride is a New Englander; This was a new treat for me but one I've gotten to like over 33 years! Will have to buy the veggies this year though, it froze several nights here in Napa this week and the garden didn't survive. And I don't have Hamm's with it! a local white wine goes better. And I can't be hung over cause I gotta take down all those Christmas lights on a full stomach. There's actually an award for best decorated house and a car tour of the contenders every year.

The wife and I upon rising usually take a shower and laze about in dressing gowns all day whilst picking at a few dishes specially prepared a day or two earlier....Chilli, Curry, Spaghetti Bolognese, a buffet consisting of plate pie, sandwiches and party nibbles etc.
