Default GWX Mod & Mod help

I have been a long time player of SH3 (and 4 for that matter). Only recently did I decide I wanted to try making it a little more interesting/challenging/realistic. After reading around a bit, GWX seemed to be THE supermod to get, hence I installed it. I am impressed with it, however there are a few changes that I wasn't quite happy with, and I was hoping some of you might be able to help me in changing things to fit my desires. I am by no means a "hardcore" subsimer.

No map updates. I realize GWX is about realism, but I also play the game to have fun, and not being able to find ships quickly makes the game a bit boring for me. I patrolled around the high shipping volume areas BE/BF/AM right along the single ship and convoy routes, and didn't some across a single ship. When I did come across a convoy, I wasn't able to get into position to make a very effective attack. Kinda buzz kill there. Is there a mod that can bring this back?

I was also wondering what are the other "MUST HAVE" mods? Earlier when I was searching, I did find a thread which contained a rather extensive list of mod. I can't seem to find it now, but I remember that the OP encourage people to link us to their thread where they discuss the mod in detail.

WELCOME ABOARD!

I'm not sure what you mean by "No map updates". I haven't played in awhile, but I'm pretty sure you can have map updates on with GWX. Also, I've seen many single ships. I'm not saying you're wrong, just trying to understand the problem you're having.

"Must have" mods is a problem, because there are hundreds of mod available and what is a "must have" to one player can be a bad joke to another. As for mods threads, did you mean this one?

Welcome to SubSim Airborne101.

Check realism settings. Perhaps you have the 'map updates' inadvertently turned off.

That's what I thought as well, but I double checked that, and I did not have it set to "no map updates"

The only "map updates" I get are if I receive a radio message informing me of a convoy or task force. When I played the game unmodded, ships would randomly pop up on the map, allowing me to set a course towards them and try and find them.

Sailor Steve, that is not the thread I was thinking of. But good point on the "what constitutes must have mod" I didn't stop to think of it that way.
EDIT: Ah HA found it. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132596
Now to figure out the map updates problem.

Map updates still occur but on a much lower frequency than the stock game and IIRC only within a smaller defined radius. They have not been disabled, just reduced.

Within GWX, you can hear further than you can see and if you man the hydrophone, further than your crew can.

As to increasing the map report frequency, not an easy fix I'm afraid. I involves opening the Campaign Editor and adjusting the report frequency and distance for nearly every ship, convoy or taskforce in the GWX campaign files. There used to be a mod called "Spy Cam" which did this for you but I do not know if it was revised for the last GWX release and it was a huge overkill. It showed real time streaming traffic.

I suggest you camp out near high traffic areas and use the hydrophone. Early war is north of Ireland/Liverpool convoy route or south Ireland/Bristol route.

The last Spy Cam mod I had any involvement in was for GWX 1.03 and it did this:

Thanks for the additional help danlisa. I spent a little more time searching through the download sections and found this

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...do=file&id=157

I think that should do the trick.

I also found another mod I think I may add. The Q-ship mod
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...?do=file&id=35

My only question is how do I copy/paste the stuff in the description into the locations listed? I tried opening
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX3.0\data\Sea\EnglishNames CFG: to paste the info in, and my computer said "Windows can't open this file, etc etch". Can I simply enable the mod with JSGME?

Use NotePad to open the cfg files.
You can't use JSGME to do it.
