Default This Sarasota news really steamed me

So, Sarasota has some great folks in charge!
Putting the Iwo Jima statue on display here would make us backward looking "crackers" (she didn't use the word, but she might as well) according to Public Art Committee Chairwoman Elizabeth Van Riper http://www.heraldtribune.com/article...aper?p=1&tc=pg

That Statue represents.
As an european, i know it.
as someone interested in history, i attach something to it.

Must it be so that the statue gains respect, in a cemetary to push the point?
I think not. Only those Visitng said Cemetary will see it and remember.
The Statue will be put to rest, put away on a cemetary.

Must that Statue stand in a public place, in a setting that leads to silence and contemplation and reflection?
very much so. The Statue can still pass a message. the events are recent, or fairly recent.
Therefor the Values i carries can still be transported to the younger generations.
These values can be of a big inspiration for further generations to act, to get on their feet and to fight.
Fight their own lazyness and the inner devil.
Fight together, not alone.
Fight for a cause, and see things through.
and many more.

maybe the question to ask is this one:
WHAT IS this statue?

Indeed, the post seems to have nothing to do with the subject.

I am not getting any controversy with this story. Sounds like the city is taking the decision of where to put this statute pretty seriously.

I agree with Susan Chapman in that this decision should not be rushed.

What I don't like is the insinuation that if "we" put that statue on display "we" would be "backwards".

...and as HundertzehnGustav says, they seem to want to bury it instead. Lets not think about our past at all. Seriously, what could we possibly learn. Wouldn't the street look so much better lined with rainbow flags or a really nice phallic piece of modern art, maybe something that incorporates burning the 'merican flag, that's always popular with the artsy crowd.

As was said.
Uh....what?

Neither of your posts appear to have anything to do with......
"It also potentially puts Sarasota in a category of looking backwards, and I think as a community we need to be looking forwards."
.....maybe it is all just a reading fail on your part.

Or perhaps it does suggest from both your posts that you are simply ranting just to rant about your own issues

I do not live in Sarasota, however, if I did then I would like to see the statue in a park where a piece of great 20th Century art can be admired by all (or not, as art is subjective). Arlington already has the national Iwo Jima memorial so no point placing the statue in another cemetery. It could go inside a museum but I think it is better outside where it can weather with time and is more accessible. It is a town planning issue, and if tax dollars are being spent then the citizens should have a say.

This is a replica of the statue in Arlington.
It's in the veterans section of the cemetery where my father is buried.
A cemetery is a place of rest. A place to remember with quiet reflection on those who have gone before us.
I don't consider the statue as being buried there. It is there as a memorial to the sacrifices of our men in uniform.
It shouldn't matter where Sarasota decides to put theirs and raising a ruckus about it just shows disrespect in my eyes.
