unable to complete any missions in med campaign

Hey guys, I have been playing Silent Hunter since SH1, and am very frustrated that I cannot complete any of the missions in the mediterranean campaign. The only things i come into contact with are a bunch of destroyers escorting 3 cruisers. Have not seen a merch in months. Not sure if this is the reality of the game, or if I am not playing correctly. Also can I instruct my navigator to set up search patterns?
