playing around with mission editor am unable to check box for "human control". Is this a bug? By unable i mean the that no checkmark will appear in box after i click it.

Depends if the ship is playable, such as a US sub or a modded ship that you can human control. If not, the box should be greyed out or you would not be able to check it.
