Default bungo pete

was recently playing bp mission and thought i had pete by "the short and
curlies" so to speak. Boy was i wrong. I was lying in wait with a perfect
setup i.e. 90 degree shot to the port side at 2000 yds submerged. Good ole pete was on a steady course of 215 degrees(true) when he suddenly
changed course to 210(true) and headed straight for my position about 7nm from my "lying in wait position"(2000yds @ 90 degrees port side shot). My question is since 7nm is about 140 football fields in length its
highly unlikely that the sighting was visual. If my understanding is correct the akikaze class was outdated for 1943 time period. Did its underwater detection system have the range or sophistication to detect a sub at 7nm.
