Default Returning to SH5, need refresher.

Hi there!

It's been quite a while but I'm interested in doing some SH5 once more, but sadly I've forgotten most of the "tricks" I used to know.

I'm running using Real Navigationm along with automation scripts (like the one that automatically gets a nav fix every couple of hours, or starts automatic patrol patterns), and I've got a few questions:

1- What's the "trick" to determine a visual contact's speed using the periscope? I know it involves counting how long it takes to pass the crosshairs, but I forget the exact calculation (it involves the ship's length as I recall, and counting how many seconds it takes and dividing it by SOMETHING).

2- I remember there being Something Wrong with the mediteranean campaigns. I'm currently in the middle of Happy Times, but once I'm done I was hoping to try my hand in the mediteranean. What's the problem with the med campaigns?

Hum... and that's about it for now, actually.

Thank you.

No help yet?

I think I remember it is the time it takes to cross the crosshairs divided by the length in feet, multiplied by something, to get the speed in knots.

I'd appreciate some help, if possible. It's basically the last piece of the puzzle I need before I can at least sink some stuff.

Thank you.

To answer number 1)

2 methods

1 - if at 90 AOB : (length of ship/Time for ship length to pass a fixed point)x2 (1.9 to be precise)

or

2 - distance travelled in 3 mins 15 secs (if using metric in the game) divided by 100

hope this helps

Divided by 2 or 1.9 doesn't work here.
Have to divide by 1.85 to match the result given by game speed info (when i enable it)

It works a charm from 45° AOB each side, but have to be not too far away from boat.
Starting chrono from exact bow to exact stern with vertical periscope line is very important.

BTW, i use same technique in SH4 with OTC mod (wich is the only mod who gives boats length in ID manual) and it works as good

Yeah, I remember that it's pretty uncertain, but it gives a good approximation. But by the time I quit I got quite good at "guessing" the margin of error and compensating for it. Made for some fun "off the hip" torpedo shoots.

Mind you, my favourite attack was when I went at a convoy "Krestchmer" style: snuck in a convoy during a storm while surfaced, and emptied my tubes at ships all around me. It was glorious.

This was pretty early on, of course.
