Problem updating SH3 gold edition

I wanted to show my 10 year old son the game. When my old version of SH3 would not work with Windows 7, I studied this thread: "How to play Silent Hunter III without the DVD in the DVD Drive (Starforce free)"

I purchased the recommended gold edition from Amazon, but could not update it with the latest patch. "Unrecognized version' error.

Any advice appreciated,

Welcome on board!
This Version usually contains already the 1.4b patch, also if the menuscreen just shows 1.4 in the lower right corner.

Do you like any mods that offer improvements?

I use GWX for my base super mod. Others like NYGM, or LSH 3 as theirs.

It's very hard to go wrong with GWX. Simple installer, tons of improvements. I haven't played the stock game in years.

Download all seven bin files and the exe file. Put them together in the same folder. Run the exe. You're good to go.

I also recommend SH3 Commander. It does for your career what the supermods do for the game.

I have SH4, but for some reason don't play it. I still play SH2 on occasion, and do like SH3. I think I would like to spend some of my rare free time with it.

It provides so much more depth and polish to the game. A ton of new ships, improved AI, better graphics and sound. It's no exaggeration to say that almost every aspect of the stock game was improved in some way by GWX. They almost rebuilt the game from the ground up.

This sounds very promising. I'm no expert, more of a beginning player. I don't use manual targeting for example, and am baffled by the various plotting instruments on the navigation screen.

Would SH3 be harder for me to play with this mod?

You're not alone. I've tried manual targeting and failed miserably every time. I have manual turned on, but also WE (Weapons Officer) Assistance. There are a couple of mods that keep it easy but make it feel more real. That works for me.

Yes and no. GWX does make it harder than the stock game, but that's because the stock game is ridiculously easy. There are things to learn, but that's part of the fun.

I don't think GWX offers an option, but I could be wrong.

This little mod removes all the swastikas. It's strictly a graphics mod so it shouldn't interfere with anything else.

I have the stock SH3 Gold edition and have just installed SH3 Commander. Is it ok now to install GWX3? I'm wondering if SH3 Commander needs to be removed first.

[HW3]

Sh3 Commander is a stand alone program that works with SH3. It does not have to be installed inside the SH3 folder. It should be "rolled back" if you have used it to launch a patrol, so any changes it made to the SH3 files are removed prior to installing GWX. The latest version of it has a automatic rollback feature if the box is checked in the options.
