Default The next domino to fall in the UK high street

I wasn't aware Blockbuster was still around

Quote:
DVD rental firm Blockbuster has become the latest UK High Street firm to go into administration after struggling against internet competitors.
The chain has 528 stores and employs 4,190 staff.

For a moment there I thought I was going to be bereft of pizza!

I won't miss Jessops, I have a local camera shop I've used since I was a teen, they've managed to keep trading just fine and hopefully will now see more trade with Jessops out the way. I'd never bought anything from Jessops.

I won't miss Comet, I use a local white goods trader (I get charged cost+vat ), although he's part of the Euronics chain he's still relatively independant. I don't think I've bought anything from Comet since 2005, and that was the first time in a long time.

I won't miss Blockbusters, I used to use them until I got posted from Brize and never joined anywhere else. The wife and I once went in to our local one but they needed a credit card to join and we just don't have them!

So praise be that Domino's Pizza is still alive and kicking.

Well the only one I'd really be bothered about should it ever go, is M&S where the wife works....I've a 20% staff discount card

M&S won't go, it's an institution whereas all these other places aren't!

All of the Blockbusters in this area are now a collection of shoe stores, wholesale paint distributers and fast food resturants. Haven't seen a Blockbuster Video retailer in years.

There are some here who probably don't even know what a video is.

Or a record, or a cassette tape, nevermind an 8-track.

We still have one I can name. Maybe others, but I'm not sure.

How does a video rental store compete with a service that charges a monthly fee? Or when the customer can choose between renting a video for $3 or buying it for $5? The only time I can see going that route anymore is if I suddenly decide I want to watch a particular movie now. Even then there's a good chance I can stream it from Amazon for the same price.
