Not Getting a Hit!!!!

Ok....I admit that I am a newbie. I have played SH3 (vanilla) for 3 days now on normal setting(25% realsim). When I switch to hard (71% realism) I don't get a single hit on a ship. Today...I just learned that the Notepad setting are manual and I have to click each one to set it.

So here is what I did. Started the game and went back to Normal setting and engage a ship on the mission. I did this to get all the Notepad info I could that was done for me. I then restarted the same game but changed the realism to 71%. But I don't understand the attack info. I can get the Range setting OK. (identify the ship and check the box) then use the crosshair to set the height from water line to tallest pert of the ship. But I am having a terrible time with AoB and speed. I am sitting dead in the water facing the ship at 90+/- degrees. When I go to click the Aob it brings up and center ship and a dial. I place the pointer at about 4 degrees stb because that looks like where the ship is headed. I know this is not right by looking at the info I have which says that it should be 69stb. Why is it so?

Speed, I think I jsut need to wait a longer period that 30sec. I am sure I will get a better reading.

So I guess I need to understand Aob better. Not sure were to go for help.

AOB (Angle On the Bow) is the angle he sees you at. If you were standing on the bridge of his ship, it's the angle your boat would be at relative to him.

Personally, I've never gotten the hang of it. I have Manual Targeting on because I hate the little triangles, but I keep the Weapons Officer Assistance turned on and let him do the work. I just like that it feels real. I can't really do it.

I had EXACTLY this problem when I cranked up the realism for the first time a few weeks ago (now I'm a convert). Sailor Steve has explained speed and AOB, and to be honest if you're shooting from the right range (less than 1,000m) you can be as much as 45 degrees out on AOB and 50% out on the speed and still hit.

Check out this thread , lots of helpful Subsimers suggested a gread mod to me which is a bit more realistic and easier to use. Worth a look.

AoB is quite easy to obtain by imagining two lines. Let the first be the diameter line of the target ship, and.second by our sub. Now just stretch them in your brain, until they cross. There is Your angle, sir.

Why does it appear to me that the direction of travel is 90 degrees from me but the but the Aob wants me to set it at 69 stb? I assume that is his present angle to me. But that doesn't mean what is angle will be when I fire my torpedo. Are the sub computers compensating for that?

The AOB should be the angle at the current time, i.e. as you're observing the target, and not the angle at which it will hit.

Note that for AOB close to 90 degrees, it may indeed appear that you're looking at the target's side whereas in fact you may be as much as 20 degrees away from perpendicular. To help you with that, search for visual cues on the target such as double masts (pairs of masts on each side of the ship): when the masts align, the AOB is 90 degrees. In the absence of double masts, look at the forward face of the superstructure: you won't be at AOB 90 until that disappears from view (in other words, you're looking at it straight from the side).

One last thing: after you manually enter the AOB in the TDC, always remember to switch the TDC back to auto, which will update the AOB value as the target changes bearing.

He told me to be more aggressive and when I was asking for some advice on my first convoy. So I surfaced fired all my eels and shot everyting. 3 neutral American ships sunk. Never took his advice again
