I suppose it's time....
I need to learn how to do manual targeting. I've used the Weapon Officer long enough. I want to try manual targeting. SH3 and SH4 mainly. I need some challenge and realism. Plus, this will be good for me to do some extra math in my free time.

You know that the best place to ask this is in the SH3 and SH4 thread this thread is for other games not having their own dedicated seaction every Silent Hunter has its own section.
here are some places to take gander of or post a new topic in the SH3 or SH4 thread many avid SH# and SH4 players rarely venture outside those respective forums : http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=146795 http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=182 |

It's good you gave it some thought before posting, but really this place isn't appropriate for your question. Actually, you didn't really ask anything. It was more like a statement of desire.
Anyway, SH3 and SH4 (SH5 even) have clearly distinct methods of inputting the targeting data, so there isn't a one-way general approach to do it in both sims. Some concepts are the same, as you need to figure out range and bearing, Angle on the Bow (AOB), speed. But each has a different way of getting them in the game. And some are unimportant in one sim, while required for the TDC in the other sim. It really pays to search the individual forum sections of the games. As a start, start with the Subskippers Bag of Trick thread (link) in the SH4 section for SH4. And for SH3, the GWX 3 manual (direct link) has an appendix in the back with a clear tutorial on the targeting proces. Which is good and valid enough for stock SH3 too, iirc. |

Good luck my friend. It's not easy. I have yet to hit the barn door from 5 feet away.
