I was patroling 25 nm away from short island on the 12 of november 1942 and all of a sudden a task force came right to me. It was Yamatos 2 kongo battleships that he diverted from truk to bombard Henderson field and support the reinforcementes to Guadalcanal on the last attempt to retake the airfield by the japanesse in what became to know as the battle of Guadalcanal, the last of several major naval engagements around the land battles of the campaign.
I found myself perfectly position on the flank of the TF consisting of 2 bttleships 2 heavy cruisers and 12 destroyers, with a gap just were i was, 45 degerees ahead to their starport. Daytime, clear skies, save the game, take a breath and ready to give it a go. Now, i target the first battleship on the line, TDC measures with picks on the periscopes, four fish in the water, not even close. Reload the game, and 5 more attempts to the dammed battleship, not even close....dammmed. Ok lets target one of the cruisers on the outside line, 10 more attempts, of which 3 hit but dud torpedos. Well, here is the point, it took me 15 apempts on a perfect position the finally get a strike on a heavy cruiser, then heavily deph charged and barely survived. Am I that bad or is this nearly impossible to hit a big warship? What you guys think. Now i have the doubt if continuing the cmpaign with the HC sunk or just accept the reality that i am not going to ever sink a big ship. |
