The map of Europe went beserk in the 40's then the Falklands in 82 registered little more than a blip......an interesting contrast.

Arms dealers legally sanctioned ones and black market ones. Many times a war in one region spreads unrelated conflict(some times related) because suddenly a large number of weapons is available in x region it is bad news look at Libya many flocked there to acquire the plethora of Qaddafis many weapons caches for them selves and now all over North African violent groups are acting up.

The other issue is no matter how well disciplined the military forces present there is always going to some black market sales even in the US they find US military weapons that have been sold into the black market if some troops do this in the US what will stop them over seas? I am not saying that very many US troops do this but some do.Anyone that thinks that the US military is crime free failed to read the base paper jail log or did know any MPs.The Us military has excellent over all discipline so one can imagine how bad the issue could get with a poorly disciplined one like Russia where it is widely believed that a sizable portion of troops where selling weapons in Chechnya.

How well do you think that the weapons we give the troops in the Afghan Army are controlled?

When I was in Germany the German,Dutch,Turkish, and US Army Criminal Investigation Command and the US Air force Office of Investigation(last two think military version of the FBI) busted up this massive drug smuggling ring that involved citizens of the mentioned nations and Us military members of the listed branches these guys had been around for several years running mostly MDMA(ecstasy) a major part of this ring where Army MPs and Air Force SPs and Air Force Load masters.

The cops knew who not to search when they came on base with goods or if they where running a drug dog through each aircraft which is done after landing and before take off this could not be tricked so they just ignored any dog hits. The load masters where the long range smugglers simply hiding the dope in their flight suit. Then when they go to certain countries they deliver. The ony way they knew about this ring was when a load master tested positive for MDMA and spilled the beans.

Here is the thing to think about what stops even a small number of others from also smuggling weapons?

You never know who is most loyal to money so my view is that you cant fully trust anyone not even in the military. Just by adding variation like having the dog handlers rotated randomly even within shifts would have made part of that rings job much more difficult.
