Default Malfunction?

I have just started playing SH3 with GWX and something went badly wrong on my 1st patrol.

I was returning to Wilhelmshaven and when I was about 20km(?) away suddenly there was huge damage and my boat flooded and sank.

Was this likely to be a malfuntion or is there minefields I was unaware of?

There are minefields and sub nets guarding the entrance to Wilhelmshaven. There is a pulldown chart on the map page that shows the position of the minefields and nets for all the friendly harbors. Be careful, there are Allied minefields around Helgoland also.

Why would say a thing like that? What did I ever do to you? Well, besides that? And that other thing? That wasn't my fault. Well, it was, but I didn't really mean it. And you can't blame me for the...oh, never mind. Some days I just can't win.

I played the stock game about a year or two ago but not for very long. It was only recently I reinstalled it with GWX and SH commander and I am impressed at how good it is. Anyway I have since lost another boat on the 1st patrol. There wasn't much happening so I decided it might be a good idea to have drill. I ordered the boat to dive and the boat ended up getting damaged very quickly and then destroyed before I could react. Is it normal for the boat to be crushed at such a shallow depth? It can't have been much more than 40m.

That depends on if the boat had received damage before or not. Were you in shallow water, in a mine field, near a sub net, bombed by an unseen enemy bomber, shelled from a shore installation. As you can see, it could have been any number of things that caused it. It is rare but, it can happen.

Did you order a crash dive in shallow water?

Yes, some of those are indeed possible. I am sure it was my error as opposed to a defect in the boat.

I would very much appreciate if someone could clarify which ships I am not allowed to attack because I found all the messages that came through confusing when the war began.

I headed north through the Irish sea and managed to sink a couple of warships and a small coastal cargo vessel. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to attack the cargo ship but decided to sink it anyway.

So can I attack all British shipping other than passenger ships?

thanks.
