When I selected the "Malfunctions" option from the excellent SH3 Commander mod and options control programme, little did I realise how fatal it could be.
I previously posted about diesel leakage whilst in transit to America and how I put it down to battle damage. Only just made it home. Well I am not sure if I am going to get home this time. I left the supply ship at Cadiz, made full speed with decks awash for deep water and waited for the first planes to come. When they did, I had a shock. Gave the order to crash dive and the telegraph closed the engines down and I lost dive speed. Lucky my momentum took me down but took some damage to the tower. So I cant crash dive because of a broken telegraph and am limping back to Lorient and staying under as much as possible but the planes are following me and I have taken damage on 3 attacks now. So now I am waiting for night and will run on surface then and stay down during the day. Seriously, as the SH3 Commander guide points out - the "Malfunctions/Sabotage" option means to say you have make some real hard decisions about continuing your patrol when you have mechanical problems. Makes the game more interesting but not sure what it does for my stress levels.

So , you have learned something.
When the mulfunctions option is enabled always test your equipment before leaving home waters: Check scopes , speed telegraphs , crash dive. You might be in for some nasty surprises when trying to engage aircrafts: Flak guns don't reload. This is to simulate corrosion by salt water. Welcome to hell! Gute Jadg Herr Kaleun |

I once read somewhere the U-boat crewmen sometimes sabotaged the boats themselves in order to get away from the danger.
Reading war diaries of U-boats there always seem to be something broken in the boat. Sometimes they go on, sometimes they have to get back. I have not played with malfunctions enabled myself. I think that Stiebler's latest addon is also incompatible with SH3Commander malfunctions. So I only have the possibility of engine damage. Malfunctions would add to the feeling of danger in the game, though... Maybe I should try that one day.
