Default Here's your sign: Following GPS into the ocean.

Man guided by GPS drives off ferry into harbour in Alaska

Quote:
WHITTIER, ALASKA—Taking bad advice from the GPS unit in his car, a man drove into Whittier’s small-boat harbour Thursday morning just after departing a ferry nearby.

The man, who was not named, was apparently relocating to Alaska from the Lower 48 and arrived on a ferry about 6:30 a.m., said Dave Schofield, director of the city’s Department of Public Safety. The man drove off the ferry in his Subaru car loaded with belongings, two dogs and a cat, Schofield said.

He didn’t make it far.

About 215 metres from the ferry dock, a GPS unit in the man’s car told him to take a hard right turn, Schofield said.

“The GPS apparently misrouted him, and he drove down the ramp for launching boats into the water,” Schofield said. “He was unfamiliar with the area is the only answer I have for you.”

.....

I am sure there will be a law suit about this. It is not this guy's fault, the GPS told him to drive into the water.

He is a victim too.

Similar thing happened in our region a few years back, the Sat navs were diverting drivers and HGVs through a narrow lane and across a Ford which caused a few problems amongst some modern cars which don't interact with water very well.

I'll bet a glass of Dr. Pepper he was using a TomTom. I didn't see it in the story.

Pratt!

If his satnav is held responsible in any way then his license should be immediately revoked. Same with people who head down motorways the wrong way, one way streets the wrong way, and turn onto train tracks or into rivers - they don't deserve the luxury of driving.

I hate GPSs, refuse to use them, still navigate the old fashioned way with maps.

A few months back, I went to another city on a day trip with a client. On the way back to Montreal, there were 3 bridges we could cross. She had a fancy GPS that was plugged into the traffic network so the GPS could route us where there is less traffic. The GPS was routing us towards one bridge that had much less traffic going into town than the other two. The route looked a bit strange, so after I inquired, I was able to point out to her that that bridge was a one way leaving town during rush hour, meaning we would not be able to use it for another 3 hours.

I got GPS on my smartphone and it ran me through the gauntlet of NY/NJ area roads with great accuracy.

But what people forget is that GPS is a navigational aid, not a substitute for your own eyes and driving instincts.

This idjit gets nothing other than a
