Default Gun Battles...

Recently attacked a convoy on the surface. I sank 2 large merchants and got away. Shadowed for a few hours and went back in for round 2 but got confronted by a corvette. Flower Class I think. I gunned him down. It seemed fairly easy. Is this advisable from now on? He scored no hits on me. It's Mid-1940

What version? Stock? Destroyers are very easy in stock. What you describe is something that never happened in real life. People used to talk about sneaking up on a Flower from behind, but the only time it happened for real the 40mm AA gun at the stern made short work of the u-boats crew, and forced a surrender.

I like your new avatar, by the way.

You were extremely lucky. I am guessing that you were playing stock. I could be wrong. Corvettes/Destroyer Escorts are very effective at making a sub's soon-to-be short life miserable. Flower Class Corvettes are nasty. Consider yourself fortunate and remember that it is highly likely that the next time, the corvette will smoke you.

You where very lucky, and since I play with GWX, with that mod, that would be suicide. You can sometimes survive a scope torpedo attack on a escort, or if you use the cargo ships to block for you, give you enough time to shell a smaller merchant before they can get you in range. However life can get very messy very quickly if your on the surface and any type of ship starts to fire at you.

Sorry it took so long to respond.

I play GWX 3.0 gold with hsie's Realism Hardcode Fixes as well as some other eye candy mods. Flat sun fix, etc. I do consider myself lucky because, well, I try and steer clear of the escorts as much as possible. (I've been sank by an ASW Trawler before, for God's sake!!!!) I was shocked at how.. Simple that gun battle was.

EDIT: Thank you Steve. I've always been fond of Kilroy and the story behind it.

EDIT:It was at long range. 6000-ish meters. I was using the targeting scope on the 88. That binocular thing with the mil marks that pops up when you scroll the mouse wheel, and was clicking on my watch officer for best guess range.

With a couple lucky shots you can sink some smaller ASW craft. But you really need element of surprise (which doesnt count for much ingame) and whole lotta luck to try it If your lucky enough to find a lightly guarded convoy, you can sink the ASW with eels, and gun the rest down.

Yeah. The thing with SH3 is that it is designed as a submarine battle, not a surface battle. The AI can be really stupid in surface battle situations. Once I stayed behind a ship that was only properly armed in the bow. The stern had a low-range gun of some sorts. The ship was travelling in a two-ship convoy and never did leave it's formation to shoot me with the real stuff. I stayed out of the lowrange weapons range and could shoot the surface ships in impunity. ASW trawler if remember correctly. Anyways I started feeling really silly pretty soon. I interrupted the attack and now go after the rule BdU actually gave during the war: U-boats are not allowed to attack armed vessels with the deck gun.

Well I'm glad I didn't try gunning the Flower few nights ago... although it looked doable... it seemed to me that she couldn't sustain much beating with IXB's 110mm gun... i torpedoed her.... it was bloody difficult because she was circling around me... and she has pretty tight turning rate... spend two torpedoes but after that the convoy was unprotected... and slaughtering begun...
