After I complete my main objectives in the Vladivostok mission, I get a message telling me that there may be subs near Pavloskoye naval base and that I should go and identify them.
I can't seem to do that no matter how hard I try. I tried repositioning the sub in the deep waters SE from the naval base, still nothing. I tried using my active sonar, but it gives me no contacts at all! Eventually, I tried turning truth on, and I saw there are two subs pretty much where I was expecting to find them, but I can't detected. The subs are stationary, so I guess their engines are off. That would explain why I don't get a passive sonar contact... but what about my active sonar? How do I detect a sub when its engine's off anyway? Any help is very much appreciated! |

passive and active contact should be possible. The terrain and your ownship speed may prevent you from getting a contact.
If this is how I remember it, your best bet for contact on those subs...if they are in harbor, is the periscope.

What was the depth? If it was on the surface then as stated, the periscope is your best bet. And where was the subs positioned in relation to your sub and which angle where you at? It could be something to do with which array you were using.

Thanks for the answers!
The two subs are stationary at about 150ft depth (I know this because I activated Show Truth, in frustration) so no periscope. I move around at 3 knots speed, positioning my sub so that the point where the 2 enemy subs are is at 90° at port or stbd. I try to position myself so that I can get the best reading from all the arrays. All arrays are functioning correctly with minimal background noise. Bear in mind that I was able to detect and classify all contacts in the first part of the mission, no problem. |

My best bet is to hit the subs with active sonar head on. That way you can maximize the sonar coverage. If all else fails then it must be a glitch. I can detect them with no problem and I am further away than you were. If it doesn't work then I recommend restarting the mission.

Yeah, I thought it might be a glitch... Anyway, I'll try your suggestion about active sonar head-on!
thanks |

What's your depth, and what's the depth of the water between you and the targets?

Sorry I disappeared, I was out of town for the weekend!
I tried active sonar head-on: nothing at all. I'm at 58ft depth. The enemy subs are at 150ft. The sea at my position is about 70ft deep and about 200ft deep at the enemy's position. We're pretty close (about 5.5 nm). The sea between us becomes pretty shallow about half way through (35ft), then depth increases gradually to 200ft. I see no reason why an active scan shouldn't produce any contact... |

Note, I repeated the same experiment from another position, so that my depth and the depth of the water between us would be different. Still no contacts on acive sonar.

I think I figured it out. The solution was quite easy, actually... Like I said, between me and the enemy subs the water became more shallow and then dropped to 200 ft. This means that there was a sort of crest behind which the subs were hiding. When I passed this crest, I was able to detect them...

Good to hear! The ocean goes out of its way to mess with your sonar sometimes!

Well, this leaves me with another question, though. The enemy subs were idle and I detected both of them with my spherical array. Since their engines are off (I think), shouldn't it be impossible for my passive sonar to detect them?

I have no idea. My best bet is to just to use active in these situations.

In both stock and LWAMI database subs generate some noise even with engines off and at zero speed. With quiet sea you will hear them. If you want really undetectable subs, increase sea state. Once I detected Kilo by colliding into it (following link contact).
