Assassin's Creed - Any good?

The series is on sale on Steam until tomorrow, I think. They look kind of interesting and I quite like the idea of Batman-ing around in Renaissance Venice. Are they any good? I'm looking at the second one just now. Looks like it might be entertaining for a few hours.

I notice they are Ubi titles. So my other questions is: If I buy these, even via Steam, am I going to have to put up with some weird DRM silliness before I can play them? I believe UBI may have form on this sort of thing...
