american destroyer question

I just started a UBoat campain with TMO SH4. I set sail for Pearl Harbor. Knocked out some merchants along the way. When I got about 75 clicks outside the harbor I sank a merchant. Then like 8 american destroyers came, i guess from the pearl harbor. I was never able to shake them and eventually got sunk at 170 in a IX boat. I like this mod but the destroyers are to much for my taste. I don't like spending hours trying to escape. Is there a way to alter a file in the mod to make destroyers less aggresive?

Or should i have been even deeper?
