Default Modding SH3

Ahoy there! (cheesy greeting out of the way, I shall proceed :-D)

New to the Subsim forums and I do hope this topic is in the right place and has not been discussed elsewhere to the point that everyone is sick of talking to people like me.

I am a returning SH3 player. Not played for atleast 4 years. I was discussing old games with a friend and the subject strayed on to simulations. We discussed old sims on the Atari Ste and Amiga, namely: F117a stealth fighter, Apache gunship and some tank simulator that I can't for the life of me remember the name of. Ultimately I ended up recommending he play SH3 as he had not done so before (I realise it isn't old, it's just where the conversation ended up).

A day or so after the memories of SH3 came flooding back. Once I had progressed to fully realistic I loved the tense engagement, trying to sneak a torpedo volley into a heavily escorted merchant fleet, then crash diving as the destroyers raced to my position dropping depth charge after depth charge. Or messing up my navigation, and coming to periscope depth expecting to find the merchant fleet 600m or so infront, upon no targets sighted, panning round only to see a huge hull bearing down on us and realising I was in the middle of the convoy...... DIVE DIVE DIVE

So I quickly realised I had to play it again. But there were some issues with the game that I wish had been resolved and some additions and alteration I'd have loved to have seen. I then found these forums and quickly realised there were some major mods out there that really enhanced the SH3 experience. I downloaded and installed GWX3 as that seemed to be one of the most popular. Unfortunately I haven't had time to play it yet.

Where the devil am I going with all this? Well please forgive the lengthiness of the post, I felt I could both introduce myself and ask the question I intended at the same time. So here goes

I'm familiar with using mods of various games but not with SH3. I would like to know what mods out there (if any) compliment and enhance GWX with minimal effort required to get them working in synch. Usually I wouldn't ask this sort of question, but as I'm a late comer I thought it would be far more efficient to ask all of you salty old sea dogs, rather than spending days, if not weeks, back researching and trialing the plethora of mods available (some of which have changelogs and feature lists that require prior knowledge of past versions or general understanding of SH3 modding specifically.

Anyway, waffle over hehe Looking forward to hearing any responses :-)

Thanks

WELCOME ABOARD!

There are probably over one hundred mods that work well with GWX. What you settle on really depends on what you're looking for in the game, and you likely won't know that until you've played it for awhile. There are mods that force you to play more realistically and there are mods that just make it look better, sound better and feel better.

One thing you must have is JSGME (JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler). This tool will let you install and uninstall mods with no fuss.

Somewhere down the line you might want to consider SH3 Commander, the tool that does for your career what a supermod like GWX does to the game itself.

The best thing you can do is have a look here:

Thanks, I had heard about SH3 commander and that link sums it up very nicely. Seems to be the sort of thing I'm looking for. I will be downloading it very shortly :-)

I guess I'm after a little bit of everything, I have a reasonable computer and never really have any trouble running things on it. So I guess I'm looking for mods that force me to play realistically whilst tarting everything up a bit. The mod manager is something I haven't heard of but I will most definitely look into it.

For now as you recommended I will keep it fairly simple with SH3 commander and GWX3. I'm sure with the abundant features that they add I won't be feeling like something is missing.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the information :-)

JSGME is included in the GWX3.0 download.
Don't be afraid of it; it is really quite simple and easy to use.
