Default convoy escort ability???

lo all, before i ask the question let me first recount what happened.
i attacked a large convoy last night,i was in near perfect position about 2km ahead of the lead ship, submerged and creeping forward on slow ahead.
i didnt even raise my periscope till they where about 4km away from me and blissfully unaware i was there.
i picked 2 targets and gave both 2 torps each, the nearest escort at that time was about 7km away from me.
i went deep and moving away at flank speed,i waited till i got the torpedo impact message then went to silent running directly away from the convoy.
despite that, the nearest escort was on top of me in minutes with one from the other side of the convoy not long after.
surely there is no way they could have found me so quickly.
what sort of range does their detection equipment have to be able to do that????
sorry forgot to say this was at night, the sea wasnt rough but not flat calm either

At flank speed, I think my deaf grandmother in Omaha heard you. *Might as well have asked the cook to bang on some pots. *Or had Bernard practice his non silent Italian singing in Japanese. *Better yet, do an emergency blow and paint "here I am!!!" on the conning tower. *

The saying is run silent, run deep, not run deep, run like a 4 year old on meth.

Go into the control room and look at the engine rpm meter. If it's above 100, you're probably doing something wrong. Where is my trombone?

i understand that and was at silent with my stealth meter green all the way.
i reloaded an earlier save and did the exact same thing without the flank speed run and they where still all over me in minutes.
am i missing the point about the stealth meter, does green not mean you are undetected and therefore they would have no idea where you are,or am i reading too much into this?

IIRC (I don't use it anymore) it shows your potential for detection, not whether you have been detected or not. *All it takes is it to go red for a fraction of a second and they might hear *you. *You may not have even seen it flip. *They might have immediately lost you, but they now know your general direction and will respond accordingly.

Your best bet is to practice good discipline and not rely on a meter. *Always assume they can detect you. Approach and withdraw as quietly as possible. *If your at range,k then you may get away with 1/3 speed or so, but if they're going to be jumping you, then manually clicking the speedo till you get below 100rpm (about 1 knot) is better than going just silent running, but you still need to do that.

I only use flank when they can't heear me (no ASW assets around), or if they know where I am and I have to manuever to go deep or avoid DC's. *

Also if you use electric torps you'll be a little harder to track

Also, my understanding is that the game doesn't remember you're in silent mode when it loads your save. I know when I load a save I can issue the command even though the icons show I'm already running silent. I try to avoid saving submerged at all, but when I can't avoid it I always stop the engines first.

Never save submerged or within detection range of another ship, leads to corrupt saves.

i must be lucky,i have heard about the problems people have had with corrupt save points,i upto now have never had a problem no matter where or when i save,i use a new slot every time, could that be the reason?

Probably not.

No ody has really figured out what corrupts the saves, just that there is a higher rate of success in the conditions I mentioned above.

thanks for the advice earlier guys,i have just got away from a convoy attack,i sunk a 10,000 tonner, went deep,or as deep as i could, its pretty shallow there off the east coast of england, manually set the speed to 1 knot and stayed on silent running.
the escorts were after me and bloody close at one point but i never had one depthcharge attack.
i got away from them and now running a paralell course on the surface to try to get back into position for another attack.
time is on my side atm as its just before midnight and i will hopefully be back in contact by 3am.gives me a few hours of darkness

Silent Running, 1 knot at 200m+ (or deepest you can go), 45 Degrees reverse track to your original attack course, and keep you back to the nearest escort (escort on bearing 180). Plenty of patience and don't be tempted to speed up, even when it looks like they've lost you... 4-6hrs should see you outa there. Have a peek in the scope first before you surface... you never know what you might find !!
