Along with the recommendation to get the aforementioned mod, which is almost mandatory, if the seas are too rough, F5 won't work and neither will ordering the 2WO to give the command. You must physically walk to and man the station personally, which mans it regardless of seas. If the seas are too rough, you may have enough time to get one or two shots off, but it will function. If the crew leaves you alone at the deck gun due to rough seas, you can still fire it, but the windage and elevation are locked in and the odds of missing are almost certain unless you are very close to the target, where the trajectory doesn't have enough time to overshoot the mark.

Whilst on the subject, is there any elevation indicator like there was in SH4, or is it just guesswork?

There is, but once on the deck gun, you have to click the "zoom" button, which is tucked away next to the ammo indicator.

I normally do my own shooting, but if I recall, the procedure for getting crew to fire at you target is,
  1. Order "Battle stations"
  2. Select the target vessel using UZO/Scope (press spacebar to get the carrot)
  3. Then order crew to "Man the deck gun"

HTH

Ah....got it! I didn't notice it up there. Thanks.

I have one other question related to the deck gun. When you go to the deck gun and click on it, two men appear to help you. But when you leave the gun, the two men stay there. How do you get them to leave it?

You need a UI mod that gives you the 'icon' to press to get them to leave. In mine it's order watch stations. Not sure about the others.
