I haven't been keeping up my Studio thread because I've been out of the loop. I should be hearing what others have accomplished sometime next week. This new thread is because I got a call from Kelly the engineer today. As I said before we played an a band together thirty-five years ago. He called me today to tell me that our old friend and drummer Randy was in town, and right in the middle I had another incoming call, and it was Randy himself! He's in Salt Lake for a week or so, and wanted to get together. He had his daughter in tow and the three of us went out for lunch and had a good time talking over old times. It seems that our old guitar player, who goes by the stage name Squire Meyer, is living like a hermit in the middle of nowhere, but also wants to see us.
The bottom line is that I'm probably going to get to jam with some friends I haven't seen in more than three decades! Needless to say, it's looking like a good Christmas, which is something you don't usually hear from someone who lives alone and hardly ever sees anybody. ![]()

This must be one of your best Decembers from recent years, lots of catching up with friends and family.

AND EVEN MORE FUN!
I've long been a collector of naval reference books, having most of Conway's and Jane's, and a host of others besides. One of my longtime favorites has been Conway's Warship series. I have some of the original quarterly magazines, but by far the best way to get them is in the annual compilation books. I have about half of them, but some have always been quite expensive. Last week, however, I found a copy of Volume IV for just $30 USD, and it came in the mail today! WOOHOO! ![]() This volume comprises Quarterly issues #13-16, and has articles on the development of radar in the Royal Navy (1935-1945), US Flight-Deck Cruiser designs, with illustrations by the great John Roberts; The Design and Development Of The Battleship Dreadnought, by D K Brown (I already have Roberts' Anatomy Of The Ship volume on Dreadnought, but every little bit helps); The Design Of the 1876 armoured cruiser HMS Inflexible, also by Brown; and most importantly a series of articles on the pre-Dreadnought Royal Soveriegn class battleships of 1889, by R A Burt himself! I've read his book on battleships from 1889-1905 in the library, but to buy a copy is hideously expensive. This will do in a pinch, though, as Warship and the US Warship International issues do have articles on other pre-dreads. Of course the book also has a large number of other articles. These are just the ones that interest me at the moment. Needless to say I'm looking through it right now. ![]()
