The Night Before Christmas
By _VR_Stick

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the sky,
Not an enemy was seen with the naked eye.
The guns were all loaded with tracers and lead.
In hopes that the Hun would soon be quite dead.

The pilots were hunkered down in open cockpits,
With visions of a lager by the base's fire pit.
The Leader in his scarf and I in wool socks,
Were waiting to land and get wheel chocks.

When out in the distance came an unusual sight,
I sat up in my seat, to see what I might.
I signaled by hand and increased the throttle,
Cocked both the guns; took a sip from my bottle.

The moon was so bright you could see very well,
If this was the enemy, I’d send him to hell.
But as it approached there was not time to cater,
Best fire first and ask questions later.

We merged at top speed, as my guns spit,
The enemy, wearing red, was shaking his fist.
I input my rudder to bring her around,
Then saw him dive away, fast toward the ground.

I lined up on his six and fired again,
Pieces of something flew past my chin.
As I looked closer I saw him throwing a fit,
And heard him shout, “Wake up you ignorant Brit!!”

Now down on the deck, scissors we enter,
He countered my moves, as if to mentor.
I should have been dead as things turned dire,
Several times I was long and yet he held fire.

I was able to see better as he went by,
And I gulped as I realized, I know this big guy.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
And a big white beard, my legs turn to jelly.

I leveled my plane and gave a small wave,
He was now off my three, I did not feel brave.
A wink of his eye and a nod of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

I now saw his sleigh, a wonderful craft,
And eight tiny reindeer, none of them scratched.
He snapped the reins and put his hands in his pockets,
And the sleigh flew away like some kind of rocket.

But I heard him exclaim ere he drove out of sight.
Happy Christmas to all and learn how to fight!!
