Default Radar Doesn't Work-AT ALL

Hello, me again with another problem. Been away from the game for some time, recently reinstalled and have been fixing problems ever since. I seem to have the game in playable shape, but now I've found another problem--

The radar does not work. I know how to turn it on. I know if it is installed on my sub or not. I know how to switch between short and medium range. I know how to sweep it with the home and end keys, or to order my radio guy to continually sweep for contacts. I know what a contact would look like if I got one--but there are no contacts. I have tried again and again. I have set up multiple test missions in the Editor and it just plain does not work.

I do have alot of mods installed--but I tried uninstalling all of them and the radar still didn't work. Which is strange, because I seem to remember the radar working when I played before.

My mod order is listed below. And I do have my exe patched with the hydropohone fix.

Any ideas anyone? I have searched this site and googled in general but there doesn't seem to be any information about the issue. Nor have I found any fix for it.

have you had one installed on your boat (easy questions first)

In the radio/radarman's order bar (within TDWsUI) there is an off on button.
Heavy seas (boat dipping underwater) can switch it off

Actually, I think I may have experienced this when I moved to the later OHII campaigns. I can say with confidence that I have never had a radar contact in SH5 at all, even in those late-war campaigns, with both of the first two (90 degree/360 rotating 90) radar sets. I've never played later than the second radar set in terms of dates/upgrades available.

Been a few weeks since I've had time to play (and I've been distracted by Dangerous Waters), but would swear to not having any. Should be easy to test in a single mission, but it'll be several days before I get a chance to take a look.

A good test is to turn it on before you leave a base, the docked ship show up.

Thanks for your replies.

Trevally--yes, the radar is on the boat and I know how to use it as I was careful to point out in my initial post. I'm aware that rough seas can turn it off. But it doesn't work when I'm in the chair looking right at it with an unmoving battleship placed 17 km to my direct front. I have tried various ranges--there is no contact report from the radio/radar officer, nor is there any indication of a contact on the radar scope; not at either of the two range settings. Also, the antenna does not visibly rotate even when my radio officier is making a continuous sweep.

I believe that the Radar Warning Receiver does work, however. At least I think it worked once.

Is it possible to extend the radar antenna?

I do remember a U-Boat radar that worked although I'm beginning to think that was SH4 U-Boat missions. I don't have that installed any more.

Orpheus, thanks for your interest and I'll keep checking back to see what you find.

I am surprised. If the radar is just plain BROKE it surprises me that no one much has complained about it and that no one has fixed or attempted to fix it. I mean we have people creating mods that ensure that the Observation Periscope extension is historically accurate, but no one cares that the Radar doesn't work?

You know what would be nice? A mod that makes it possible to edit a mission so that you can put whatever gadgets on your sub want--snorkels, radars, rwr, torpedos, etc. It would be easier to see what works and what doesn't.

sid--

I haven't actually progressed in the campaign to a point where I can upgrade to the radar. I have accessed the radar by making missions in the mission editor and making sure they have the latest equipment available.

Hi Nodlew,

Try using "silentotto" to start a new career and pick a late war one.
Test the radar after your boat has left the bunker.

Here I am starting a new career in campaign "The Final Years"
I have just left harbour.

OK, Trevally, I'll give that a try. Thanks. Nice to see a picture with the radar working.

Ok, after quite a bit of messing around with the game I have the following report.

I now know what "silentotto" is--essentially a cheat code that opens up the whole campaign. Good to know that.

Using "silentotto" I tried to start a late campaign. But with my mods I kept getting crashes and other problems. I found that by uninstalling all mods I was able to get a career to start in 1943. I am not exactly sure what the issue is but I believe it is something to do with Open Horizons II.

Anyway I was able to start a career with a boat equipped with the rotatable radar and in 1943, starting from Brest, that worked. Then I started again with the earlier radar, the one installed in panels bolted on the Conning tower, and starting in 1943 in Brest that worked also. However, the radar (bolted on kind, fumo 29) still doesn't work in my custom single player mission and I don't know why. Gonna experiment with it some more.

I don't know about Open Horizon Missions since I haven't been able to get them to work yet. The game crashes every time I open the Nav map, and the port I start in for the 1944 mission, "final years", has no ships or subs in it of any kind. (?)

So, the radar works, apparently. But it works when it works and it does not work when it does not work. So the radar works sometimes and does not work at other times and I still do not understand the conditions which cause it to work or to fail to work.

If anyone knows, please enlighten me. Otherwise, I will continue my own investigations and provide any info I garner.

Follow the special instructions on how to start a campaign using OH2 .Found on the first post of the OH2 thread . Read both notes carefully .

Hi Orpheus
I can assure you that OHII has no effect on your boats equipment.
No files in OHII change anything with equipment.
OHII does change your starting bunker and boat type - that is all

If your game is working with only OHII installed and crashes when you add others - I would suggest that OHII is not the problem

Sounds like your single mission is not giving you the correct equipment

Again - please test using only OHII and im sure you will find the it does work and your CTDs when opening the map is not caused by OHII

Untill you can get a stable setup - I do not see how you can test this.
Remeber your earlier post :-

Your current mod setup is causing your issues and until you fix that you will continue to have issues

Sober, thanks for the advice. I think a lot of my problems have been because of my 32 bit system not having enough available Ram for the modded game to work. That would explain why reloading the game can fix the problems, also why the problems multiply the closer I get to a port.

Since I downloaded the CFF Explorer program, and used it and applied the cmd prompt instruction, I was able to start a late war career (Using Open Horizons II!) without any errors, crashes, or glitches. (I have 4 gb of ram)

Fingers crossed that this solution holds up. Thanks again.

Whatever I have done in this process, including reinstalling all of my mods and applying the .Exe ram tweak with CFF Explorer, the radar does work now, solidly.

Trevally, thanks for your replies. Apparently we were both typing at the same time. As I said above, I think Ram has been the issue. I have had a series of problems running the game with mods--new UIs, Open Horizons II, usually having both of those installed at the same time. My problems have included the sound/navigator/depth-under-keel glitch, myriad CTDs, and recurrent graphical glitches where various textures fail to render, for example a big white blank where the Attack Scope lens should be, or white glowing tiles where my torpedoes and sub systems should be. These problems have disappeared, then recurred without warning. It's been very frustrating.

Ram is the most likely explanation, since it is a variable, and nothing else should be.

So I am hoping the latest steps at least tame the problems, or else I'm gonna have to reinstall SH4 since I cannot afford a new computer, or even a new operating system.

Thanks to all for their explanations and suggestions.

Boy am I glad I started this thread. In the process of figuring out how to get the radar working I have apparently fixed the fundamental problem that was making SH5 nearly unplayable on my computer. Since applying the ram fix employing CFF Explorer plus the CMD prompt fix per Trevally's instructions on his Open Horizons II thread I have had NO problems with crashes, glitches, or anything else.

From now on I suggest anyone trying to help someone with crashes or errors should first ask them how much ram they have and if they have Vista 32 bit, and point them to the fix quoted below, and on the Open Horizons II thread.

It's nice when things work out well. Doesn't happen often pour moi, but nice when it does.

Quote:
Try this only if you have at least 2 GByte of RAM and at your own risk and using Vista/Win7 32 bit version.
First download the explorer from http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php
Next make a backup copy of SH5.exe. Then start "CFF Explorer" and open the orginal SH5.exe file.
Now go to NT Header/File Header and click File Header. There you will find a button labeld "click here". Click it and select the mark at "App can handle> 2gb adressest "
Save the modified EXE, overwrite the orginal one (You do have your backup of it in a safe location right?).
If you run Windows Vista 64 or Windows XP 64 or Win7 64 you're ready and didnt need to read on. The rest is only for Windows Vista 32/Win7 32 or maybe Windows XP.
Now make Windows Vista/Win7 (32-Bit) ready to support more than 2 GByte.
Open a command prompt with Administration rights. You find it under "Programs->Accessories->Command prompt" click right and select "run as administrator".
Enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072" (without quotes) in the command window and press enter.
After that restart windows

To reset back to 2GB limit:
to reset the Increased User Adressspace just start the commandline prompt with Admin right again and enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2048"

See if the above helps at all
