Default I'm Getting Bamboozled!

Hi folks,

I've spent many a year on SH3 (grey wolves), but had SH5 sitting unused on my hard disk for ages.

Trouble is I just can't get into it - the key commands and quick click icons have changed or gone.

I've seen various screenies of people with various mods that bring SH5 to look more like SH3, but there appears to be endless combinations of mods to try.

Can anyone suggest the best mods to bring the SH5 interface up to SH3 standards?

Any tips appreciated.

Thaum.

TheDarkWraiths NewUIs mod lets you have the SH3 or SH4 HUD, or a highly modified variant of SH5's original. Open Horizons II completely recreates the campaign, and many other mods change just about everything imaginable. If those are your worries, worry no more. Just take a look through the 'SH5 Mods Workshop' forums.

SH5 really does need a complete package supermod for ease of use for the end user, that fixes all bugs, and enhances the game. Most of the "first impression" posts i have read as of late would indicate this. As a former modder, i feel it is the modders responsiblity to make things as easy as possible for the end user in both instilation, and use of a mod. Some of the mods are rather complex, and not intuitive to some, with too many options, and nothing clear cut. Or so, what I've read over time would seem to indicate.

As it is, "mod soup" is the order of the day with SH5. While there's nothing wrong with "having your burger your way", the trouble with running multiple mods is file conflicts. Heavily modding Sh3, 4, or 5, is a spiderweb of file changes, many of them subltle, yet important, and all the files have to be tweaked in order that all the changes work harmoniously with each other. Until such time that a complete supermod package is made, SH5 will continue to be a cluster... err.. ummm..... a big mess. Just my 2 cents worth.

Agreed, but as so much work is still being done, a megamod in the manner of TMO seems a long way off. People are still clamouring for an update to Magnum Opus, but with TDW working on the GR2 stuff it could be quite a wait!

As a struggler with anything involving computers, I agree with Ducimus. If I had not had the personal help from Kylania, SH5 would still be gathering cobwebs. We must have a mega-mod, as there are new-comers being attracted to these mighty games every day, yet the same question is being asked. 'I can't make it work' and I'm sure we are losing a high percentage of them.

Someone needs to take the bull by the horns, ( it doesn't need to be just one person as they can work together) and put out a standard mod, with instructions as to the installation.

I'll be honest, I was thinking about reinstalling SH5, and trying it out again, but was quickly disuaded for two reasons:

1.) I looked at the very ending "lets play SH5" video. The guy was clearly running a heavily modded version of SH5, and nearly rage quit because of CTD's.

2.) Then, i looked at the mod forum. There's a crap ton of mods that look necessary, scattered all over the place. So now I have to track them all down, and do a whole lot of reading see which ones are the most complete, or do what Im looking for them to do. Blech!

What's more, in light of the Lets play CTD's, i find myself wondering if those CTD's were caused by game bugs, mod conflicts, or both. This is a mess I just don't want to hassle with, and I've worked on a megamod before. Call me jaded, call me lazy, but I just don't have the patience to do the footwork required. Think ill go back to playing Alpha Protocol. That's fun, and no work is required to enjoy it.

Thanks for your thoughts folks.

Yep I've tried one or two of the big megamods a few months a go and spent many an hour trying to work out how to get them to work - I'm not particularly technically minded, and gave up.

The tragedy is that I've just got a new computer and can't get SH3 to run either!

Alpha Protocol? Never heard of it, so I might look that one up.

Looks like I'll be staying ashore for a while.

Thanks for your input folks,

Thaum

CTDs are either mod-soup or memory for the most part, and half the reason we need a megamod in the first place. I had tons to begin with but my latest build seems solid as a rock, even using OHII full which used to CTD all over the place. It's just a case of trial and error, and I imagine that was the case in the early years of SH3 & 4 as well.

I started with SH4 & TMO (haven't played much stock of 4 or 5, modded right off the bat) and I thought you did a stunning job. TMO is still my benchmark for DD difficulty and solid gameplay. I'd love to see you modding for SH5, and I bet there are plenty who'd agree with me.

All I would ask is install it - add New UIs with TDC, Dynamic Environment and OHII and see how you get on. Those three will get you started and should be fairly CTD free; you can worry about adding others later. If you don't like it, fair enough.

But see how you get on, how it feels to play. At the end of the day only you can decide what you want to do, but with just those three mods its a completely different game, and it might go a long way to changing your opinion on SH5 and giving you the modding bug again.

Anyway (enough ego-stroking) you've been lurking in the SH5 forum for ages - you know you want to really!

Orpheus,

You are so right - I've been lurking a long time in the hope of finding an 'easy' fix to SH5, hoping it will become an improved iteration of SH3.

Perhaps it's a sign of old age, or business in life, that I can't spend hours trying different mods (and trying to get them to work), without sinking a single freighter!

I've just read on another thread, that all mods should be applied while in port - I bet that could be where I have previously gone wrong.

For me SH3 with Grey Wolves was subbing nirvana. SH5 out of the box, for me, is subbing hell (but looks very pretty).

A Silver Star to Ubi for running the Silent Hunter series in the first place, and a Gold Star to all the modders who work to make each game a viable sim!
