Default What speen do you run at in hunting mode

Well the title asks the question.
***update***>>>no it dosn't it was meant to say speed. Can a moderator change it?
Want to see what the most popular is.

Also, a few weeks ago I read somewhere that if when you are in a time compression higher than 256x, aircraft will completely miss your position.
Don't know if there is any truth in this.

Not exactly.
They will appear very rarely but when they do they will be over your head and their bombs will be exploding on your conning tower.
The next ting you will see is the death screen because the game engine will not have time to react.

Max TC for me, though I'm usually deep and perfectly still (unrealistic for a WWII sub) waiting to pounce like a trapdoor spider on detected prey. The trick is finding a good spot to sit.

I'll surface for a couple of hours to replenish the air supply and I NEVER go above 64 while hunting on the surface unless there is no apparent danger of aircraft.

I've read that aircraft won't find you higher than 256, but I have had it happen on multiple occasions, usually with ugly results.

I see.
And what speed do you hunt in?

My speed depends on the situation. When I'm positioning myself, I sometimes run at flank (parallel to a convoy, for instance) to get ahead of enemies. When I'm going after a DD, I usually run at 2-4kts, to lower the chance of being detected. Of course, speed decreases with range to-target.

Otherwise, I generally always run at 1/3 speed.

Hunting speed? Usually the same as my standard cruising speed. 9-10kts

256tc is my usual setting. I do slow it down to 128 in aircraft zones especially in the Bay.

I'd like to play at a slower tc, but I just don't have the RL time.

depends on the time period, if its 1943 and your in france, your pretty boned trying to get out of port. A lot of the time im traveling long distances due to my IXB/IXC/IXD2 fetish. I love to just randomly go to new york and kill the harbor, so I run at 2048 time compression because if I run it at the next highest I lag no matter where I am on the map.

When attacking I will go flank unless there are escorts. If there are escorts I will go flank if I don't think I will be detected. I will usually get within 600 meters and let out my eel to avoid any chance of a miss (assuming there are no escorts.)

Whilst cruising I'm at 1/3 ahead.

Tests indicate that the spawn rate of planes at tc greater than x128 drops and those that do spawn are often on top of you before you can react.

Depends on circumstances. Usually ahead 1/3. I am not a big fan of wasting fuel.

If I'm patrolling then I'm using the most efficient speed for a Type-7 boat: 8 knots. If I am trying to get ahead of a single target or convoy then I go at full or flankspeed. (depends if I need that extra knot) Once I have arrived wel in front of them I lie await coasting, deadstop or very low speed. As soon as the targets are shot at I dive deep with haste (only with escorts around), not worrying so much about noise until I am at a safe depth.

Go fast and take chances!

128TC, 8 knots cruising. Speed that bad boy up when you get a report of a merchant after you have approximated its course and guessed at her speed then red-line the rpm gauge, to get ahead of her.

What Pisces said...8 knots in a type VII gets you the longest range per litre of fuel. For other boats I would experiment with speeds and see what the Navigator tells you for "Range at current speed?".

The VII and IX are more or less the same.
