one of the things i loved about the silent hunter games was the idea of commanding a large vehicle, are there any other games were you are the commandeer of a large vessel? like a spaceship or bomber?

B-17 the mighty eighth puts in charge of a Bomber, although it's much more hands on than Silent Hunter.
Star Trek Bridge Commander puts you in charge of a spaceship from Star Trek. Dangerous Waters is like Silent Hunter but with modern vehicles. It puts you in control of either a sub or a destroyer(although the maps are smaller than SH's). There are several tank sims that put you in charge of a single tank or tank battalion(Steel Beasts Pro, Steel Armor, Blaze of War).

![]() It's not quite perfect and it's very unfortunate that it was never modded to the same level as SH3. Otherwise it's immensely enjoyable and immersive (just be careful to tweak your difficulty settings - if you put everything on 'hard'/'realistic', I honestly found the game to be unplayably hard). Only $6 on gog.com, and runs perfectly on modern hardware! The downside, I guess, is that it's old and very graphically dated (think late 90s). It was optimized to run on older hardware, so the number of planes is a bit low, too (you'll never see more than 18 bombers and 20 or so fighters in the air in any mission). I've actually recorded a "let's play" track for it recently, but haven't gotten around to finishing it yet. I dream of a sequel for it - IMO it's one type of game that would be glorious with modern technology. |

Go check 3000ad.com. Appearantly you missed the Battlecruiser/Universal Combat series the last decade.
FPS and spacesim in one. You are commander of a space ship in charge with upholding the law (or not if you choose Insurgent rebels or any other caste) in a quite large universe with crew, shuttles, fightercraft, probe satelites, miningcraft, terain vehicles + all kinds of weaponry/missiles/nukes at your disposal. You can tell the crew what you want them to do. But they have a mind of their own deciding if and when they get to it. (system repairs by engineers, medics healing, marines searching, flight engineers prepping fighters etc.) And the same goes for intruders on your ship. They've got parts to steal, sabotage or out to get you. Very similar to Startrek technology-wise. The fightercraft pilots are quite idiots in the beginning of the game. But they are supposed to increase their AI with enough experience. Same goes for the other crew. Working makes them better at their tasks. Beware of Resnig though. Rumours say he is related to Bernard. But he earned his accolades all by himself during the BC3000AD patching period. Reserve an airlock for him. And the good thing is, the older editions are released as freeware unrestricted! ![]() (Universal Combat is the latest free edition) http://www.3000ad.com/download/

I think the turrets should be controllable with keyboard shortcuts like the plane, though. I think some people might hate that the guns aren't mouse-controlled, but honestly, I think that's actually a good choice for the game - the turrets were, after all, actually controlled with sticks and the guns really were that unwieldy. If you plan on sticking with the campaign game, I highly recommend that in difficulty settings, you turn off collisions with aircraft, set enemy fighters to expert, and enemy flak to rookie. I know a lot of bombers were lost to both collisions and flak, but having played ~40 missions now and kept careful track of losses, I found that these settings were producing the most historically accurate casualty rates. Losing multiple bombers every mission to terrible AI collision avoidance is no way to go! |

Cool. It has quite a learning curve though, and unusual user interface here and there. But I don't know of a game that comes as close to really feeling like being in Kirk or Picard's command seat. (Well, Artemis I guess, but that is multistation oriented)

I looked into the B-17 game, and wonder how it works on windows 7. It really interests me, and as an old Trekkie (No I do not dress up as a klingon) the Star Trek game interests me. But I won't buy if I just install and get a crash, or have to do some over the top file editing to make work.
I bought too many old games, just to have them not work. I am not rich ya know. ![]()

Also another method of getting older games to work is to add them into DEP.

All games that you buy from GoG.com (including B-17) are Win 7 compatible. They're packaged with built-in emulators of whatever they need to actually run. It's a great site if you're interested in old games - no DRM either! I've actually bought a few games from there that I already owned on disks but couldn't get to run on newer windows versions, and so far they haven't failed me.

Have you installed it? There should be extra documentation in the docs folder of the game. Basically you are free to do as you please.
