Default Huge Oil Reserves Found in the UK

http://www.petroleum-economist.com/A...resources.html

I wonder if new finds like this can finally break OPEC's stranglehold on the world economy

From my reading it sounds to me that the story is about natural gas...not oil.

Well, let's change the focus to maybe the UK can break Gazprom's stranglehold on the European economy.

Its natural gas, not oil and it will be drilled using "fracking", not sure if thats good or not. Anyone here for/against fracking?

There was an earthquake in the Lancs a while back which some have attributed to fracking.

In terms of where I stand on it, well until we find ourselves a decent alternate energy source then it's a necessary evil.

Same here, especially as our current supplies of North Sea gas have peaked and now in decline and as a result we are now a net importer of gas. Will it reduce our household energy bills? maybe not judging by the latest price hikes by the "big 6" energy companies here.

Looking forward to a 50%+ reduction in household energy bills, a massive increase in government spending on our social infrastructure and a reduction in income tax

Totally wrong - the U.S. will liberate us by an indescriminate bombing campaign followed swiftly by ground troops wooing the local females with their nylons and chocolate. It will ask us to join them as an equal partner and we will (join them, not be equal!), barring the tights and chocolate. Sadly our WMDs were all sold off to up-and-coming dictatorships in the '50s thru '80s.
