Default Prototype for new rechargable battery-type

At the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie they have build a new prototype for a rechargable battery that is planned especially for use in electric cars. It is a Metal-Fluorid-Ion type and has ten times the capacity of Lithium-Ion-batteries of comparable size, they say. It also has advantages during the recharging process, recharging several internal cells simulatanously and not in line, one by one (whatever that means, I am not technician).

So far it is a prototype and still some time away from market introduction, they are also adressing some starting problems (which they say have been there with any new battery and energy storing technology ever invented), currently the unit has a working temperature of around 150°C, which they want to bring down significantly, also, the unit looses 50% of its possible maximum charging capacity very quickly (which still would make it five times as efficient as Li-Ion models).

They say they are very very confident that they have found the way into the rechargable battery future for e-mobility.

I personally do not plan for a car, but hope that in some years pedelecs/e-bicycles may have gotten longer legs. For some special opportunities I really would be interested in one of these. I would drive more often from Münster to Osnabrück for a one-day trip (of around 130 km) if there wouldn't be that damn hilly Teutoburger Forest in the way, which kills my nerves and empties my sweat tanks in no time. Those 20 minutes of all that 2.5 hours trip are no fun, and really ruins my dress every time.

I would also love to have a Kettweasel one day. Looks like great fun.
