How to get stationary survivors?

Hi all, been a while since i posted.

I recently got back into SH4, now playing with RFB and RSRDC.

After a conning tower upgrade om my Salmon (late war, had to fix the R04/R01 node to get the surface radar via savegame edit), I start a new patrol in Fremantle. On the map I see that my base is now changed to Midway. Does this always happen with a conning tower upgrade?

But this isn't my real problem.
In my new patrol, the first mission i get is to rescue 4 survivors near Tawi Tawi, the date is august 1943.

So I proceed to the chokepoint northeast of Tarakan Island, and circle to the north of the Tawi Tawi island. There I spot two smoke markers in the shallows. I go full speed towards them, but well before reaching them, the wind has blown them INTO the island.

In fact, after circling around the island to the south, they have travelled straight across the island, and since wind direction changed during this time, they now move west. wind speed is 6 meters per second, which is (nomograph) 11 knots!

So, I kick in flank speed, and even with 21 knots i spend almost two hours to get near them . By this time, they have crossed the channel to the west, and are now blowing across ANOTHER island .

I know this is probably something from stock game, but is there any way to have survivors stick to the spot they 'parachuted'.

thanks for any solution/answer,

@lantis

I don't have an answer for you, but that's pretty entertaining. Having them move is certainly more realistic, but not through land.

Agreed, those pilots/survivors (mind you, im not talking about lifeboats with survivors from your latest merchant victim ) moving with current and wind is more realistic, but it is now prohibiting in completing objectives.

In real life, when a pilot manages to get ashore, he would stay on the beach and possibly swim TOWARDS the friendly sub there to help, right? (remember USS Cod and the Dutch O-19 ).

So, i think for gameplay sake, floating pilots should be nailed to the spot.

That's also a good point. Another thing to consider is that in an 11-knot wind, or even twice that, a liferaft isn't going to be moving anywhere near that fast, and yes, they would paddle to try to stay in the same place.

Well, after playing some more, i have found out that the survivors only use their turbo engine (mostly westbound for some reason...) when the time compression is 8x or higher, both in 3D view (bridge for example) or in/on nav map screen.

When i remain at TC 4x or less, the survivors stay in the same place where i first spot them.

Maybe some modder with insight in the program routine regarding time compression knows why 4xTC/8xTC is the magic 'switch' ? Coriolis/earth rotation maybe? Do the survivors try to stay in the same time zone when TC is 8x or higher?

Happy hunting,

@lantis
