Default Sunken ship icons

Playing GWX 3.0- why are some sunken ship icons grey on the map and some red?

I had a grey icon once, because i often see ships in Convoys already burning and then they sink. Then i had a grey icon on the Map. But you don't get the tonnage for it.

Those that are grey are usually caused by third party ie Luftwaffe or weather.

Grey icons means you sank unknown ship and means as if you failed to identify their nationality Red icons is for enemy.. Grey icons is most of the times nonsence. If you torpedo an enemy ship from great distance the game might show grey icon as if it was too far for the player to identify it
Edited: Jimbuna's post above is also correct.

The red ones are the only ones that count. This is why you need to stay in contact with a ship that's slowly sinking. If you leave the area too soon, you won't get credit. Best to follow along and wait until the fire and flooding run their course.

The map icon thing seems fairly buggy in GWX (and it may be true in stock).

Red = a kill for you.
Gray = a kill for the weather or another German unit (but sometimes you get credit)
Blank = probably you get the credit.

I long ago quit using it for scorekeeping. Your patrol record is always accurate through the K key.

Sorry, but this is simply not true.

The AI does not know if you were too far away to identify the ship, and has no way of knowing whether you identified the ship's nationality (how on earth could it know?)

I haven't sunk a neutral in a couple of years; it could be that they show up gray. But, if so, that color is programmed for the result. It is not programmed from anything you did or didn't do ahead of time, such as identifying nationality.

And if you sink a ship that shows as blue on the map, you sunk a friendly and kiss your career goodbye.

Playing with GWX I have had Luftwaffe kills show up as red. I have come across ships in bad weather that foundered on their own that have shown up red as well. Neither were attributed to me, however my crew cheered as if we had sunk them.

Sometimes when a ship has "gone down" out of my vision (ie when I have dived after launching torps) it has shown up as grey (although almost always shows up red in this situation) but it is still always attributed to me. I just thought it was a bug.

For me, neutral ships have invariably shown up green, although I have only sunk two.

Totally agree on all the points you have made.
