Default NEVER BEFORE!

...after 5 years of playing - never before have i achieved this in a day.

i - or my flak crew shot down 5 Swordfish. the sad part is i lost one of my favorites - Jorg Bauer. sorry i have no screen shots but i get screen freeze when i do and i dont know why. but it was an awsome time in-game. i know these devils are slow, but still!

i know i should have dived - and i did after the second passing and stayed under for half an hour - and then i surfaced and then they came back in two's - the first one, alone, probably being the spotter.

Jorg took out the first and was killed as the depth charges exploded next to the boat - i was a little shocked - its only a game i said to myself , but still the disbeleif.

he was hurridly dragged below, with my shame

the other thing is they do not show up on my report. the small merchant does but the Swordfish dont - any clues?

Been there, done that.. About the only one aircraft that is easy to destroy.. The only damage I got from them was during bullet rain when they attacked both at once

For me engaging aircraft is pointless, you are not going to single-handly destroy the enemy airforce, you might (and probably will if you are using certain mods) single-handly destroy you boat.
everything to lose, nothing to gain, not the sort of bet I like to take

I loved to destroy all that little Patrolboats in the unmodded SH3 But now with GWX they just don't want to sink. You would lose all of your crew instead of destroying one of these. And even trained Flak crew doesn't hit planes. I tried once to shoot down two Hurricans . Also a few minutes later some Sunderlands appeared....so "Alaaaaaaaaarm!!!"

Last career I played, we took out 19 - maybe 20? I think it was 20 - Swordfish in one patrol (heck, all within a couple days IIRC). All taken down by the one guy on the crew who was a qualified flak gunner, until we pushed our luck too far and he ended up dead.

I'm gonna go with 20 because they always came in threes and I'm pretty sure it was the third plane of the last group that killed him, which would've made it #21 had we gotten him as well. My mistake, I thought we'd shot down all of them and ordered the gun crew to stand down. Bloody Tommy must've come out of the sun and strafed the deck and bridge before we realized he was still up there. My gunner was the only casualty.

There was a task force with a carrier in the area, which we finally found, but as usual with a task force they were moving too fast for us to ever get in a good attack position. Sent three eels at the carrier anyway from a couple kms out at a really unfortunate angle and naturally all missed.

Default My experience

WO - "Aircraft spotted,Herr Kaleun.Swordfish type"
HK - "Hmm,you sad Swordfish. Our new flak gunner can practice a little.Man the flak and shoot it down."
a few minutes later
WO - "The boat is taking damage"
HK - "Come on,what takes so long"
"The boat is taking damage"
"All right, all right, prepare for dive ,new depth 25m"
a few minutes later
HK - "What the hell was that, you can't shoot down a Swordfish. What's your name again?I forgot"
"Bernard,Herr Kaleun"
"Ahh,Bernard,Bernard,that explains everything.Abort mission,and return to base"

Question, does swordfish always mean carriers, or do they head out of British ports as well as I encountered quite a few getting out of the North Sea in 1939...

I have been told they always indicate a carrier.

In 39 carriers....it is usually the Anson that is stationed at airbases early on.

The Hurricanes are the bane of my existence. I had two after me and my gunner had them both in flames, but they continued to make passes at my boat. I admire their dedication, but I question the realism.

Single Ansons aren't that bad, but it's still best to take her down.

As far as Swordfish go, I don't think they absolutely mean a carrier is in the area. I've observed pairs of them in the North Sea, and their course roughly corresponds with them leaving Scapa.

In that cae I think I'd be checking the Scapa Flow/Loch Ewe area for carier movements.

Thanks for the update, next time I see a swordfish, I will figure out its heading and follow it, hopefully to a nice flattop

Be advised...they are normally found in fast moving battle groups but if you were to wait 70km or so north of Loch Ewe or 100km or so north east of Scapa Flow (GWX and first few months of the war) you might come across a one returning to base or enroute to Norwegian waters.
