I have been playing SH3/GWX and I have yet to see one of my crewmen get promoted. Occasionally they get medals ( Uboat Combat) but that is about it. Anything that I need to do for this?

I think they only become eligible for promotion when they reach or pass the max experience level for their current rank, how long that takes will depend on how experienced a crew you started with and how much experience the game awards them as a result of what happens on each patrol. I suspect this may depend on a variety of factors: time spent at sea, how much actual combat they've taken part in, and time spent on duty (i.e., at an active duty station as opposed to in the stern or bow quarters). But I'm really not sure how the game tallies it all up.
Generally when the game starts telling me I have promotions to hand out, I will have more men eligible for promotion than the number of promotions the game will allow me to make, and I have to think long and hard about who gets bumped up. OTOH I use Commander's "realistic crew" feature and that may put a few more experienced men into the mix at the start of a new career than what the game by itself normally gives you. ![]() |

Crews take a while to get promoted, be patient as towards the end of a career you'll have a very experienced crew.

SH3 got it all wrong, especially the medals.
1) The Front Clasp didn't even appear until late 1943. Stock SH3 makes it the first and easiest medal to get. I changed it to 60,000 and it really should be 600,000 (unobtainable) until 1943, then re-set the file to 60,000. 2) The first and easiest medal should have been the U-Boat War Badge, given out after the first war patrol if something was sunk, or after the 2nd patrol regardless. I changed the required RENOWN from 500 to 5 so everyone gets it after one patrol if you sink anything. 3) I lowered the TONNAGE required for the IC2 (given out in droves) and for the IC1. I raised the tonnage for the GCG and the KC to a more historical 100,000. That 's really too low for SH3 unless you're using manual targeting. I also like to promote my crew, so I changed the step requirements to one-tenth of stock. Now I get 4 promotions after each patrol where I've sunk something. This lets me start with almost all Bootsmen and Matrosengefreiters and slowly move them up in rank. To make changes, simply edit the SilenterHunterIII/Data/cfg/basic.cfg file Here's mine. Changes are red; SH3 default values are in blue [MEDALS_CREW] DecreaseFatigueMax=0.1 IncreaseMoraleMin=0.1 RenownStep=5; RENOWN, u-boat badge 500 SunkInPatrol=60000; TONNAGE, front clasp 5000 RenownStep2ndClass=2000; TONNAGE, IC 2nd 20000 SunkInPatrol1stClass=20000; TONNAGE, IC 1st 30000 SunkInPatrolGerman=50000; TONNAGE, GC 40000 SunkInPatrolKnights=100000; TONNAGE, KC 50000 HpStep=5 HpStep1stClass=10 Experience=1.25 StepForMorale=0 StepForFatigue=0 [PROMOTIONS] RenownStep0=50500 RenownStep1=1001000 RenownStep2=150 1500 RenownStep3=2002000

Raptor,
So when you change your numbers how often do they get promoted? Do they get promoted when their experience fills up? Or are they just promoted so that you have a very veteran crew early in the game? I am not sure how easily BdU gave out promotions and would like the game to mimic that as best as possible. |

The change I made only enables you to easily get four promotions per patrol, assuming you sink enough ships to earn the required renown. If you don't, you'll get less than four....maybe even none.
You can only give those promotions to those crew members who SH3 tells you are qualified for promotion. You can't change that. The career gamefile keeps track of each crewman and calculates when they're qualified. Example: If you gop to the barracks and spend 50 renown for the first Matrosenobergfreiter, he comes pre-qualified and if you get any promotions after your first patrol, SH3 will highlight him as being eligible. I always buy at least 4 of those guys so I have a place to use those 1st patrol promotion opportunities. The 20 renown Matrosenobergefreiters need a couple of patrols to become promotable. The regular Matrosengefreiters need even more. ADDENDUM: With GWX, you do not earn renown for either reaching or patrolling your assigned grid or for completing a patrol. You only get renown for the ships you sink, which can make it hard to amass enough to meet my reduced RenownSteps. I'd suggest you either (1) reduce my values further, or (2) install WB's Renown Replacement mod, or (3) just modify the basic.cfg file yourself, like this: SH3 stock /Basic.cfg [RENOWN] RenownReachGridObjCompleted=500 RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=200 CompletedPatrol=100 NEUTRAL=-1 ALLIED=1 AXIS=-10 WrongShipSunk=-5000 FirstRankRenown=1000 SecondRankRenown=3500 EndCampaign=-5000 GWX /Basic.cfg [RENOWN] RenownReachGridObjCompleted=0<=change to whatever you want RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=0<=change to whatever you want CompletedPatrol=0<=change to whatever you want NEUTRAL=1 ALLIED=1 AXIS=-10 WrongShipSunk=-0 FirstRankRenown=100 SecondRankRenown=250 EndCampaign=-5000

Because the medals are there too be awarded you don't have to give them out.
I'm in in 1942 and I have not awarded one since this career started in 1940. I'm like Sgt Stiner from the film Cross of Iron..."A worthless piece of metal".
