This reviewer practically dogged it. Well it looks damn nice. Though its a bug feast.

Dungeons & Dragons: 4th Edition represents one of the most drastic facelifts the long-running tabletop RPG franchise has ever undergone. The game's once ethereal elements have been turned tangible, its mechanics made far less punishing for new players, and its every component finely tuned to a state of balance that few other tabletop developers can match. I did not even know that they were working on a new DnD game until I got the email that it was released..

From what I read you correct that it seems to have 'some' bugs, but the opinions about how playable and how good it is seem to vary widely. I will buy, tho, even if it is 'just to have it'.

EDIT: It is not on Steam just yet. However, if you buy the box, it will be activated via steam.

If your wanting a nice box sitting on your shelve can't bypass owning a D&D game go ahead. But if you wanting the game to play it. Don't even bother, what a mess. Can't really moan though as the game is playable (just) and its cheap. Daggerdale probably killed the 4th edition completely. The game took me little over 5 hrs to complete just doing the main quests. Why they didn't put the time into it make this game what it should of been instead of just a rushed job & a low price to say yeah its buggy. Maybe there will be patches & plenty of upcoming DLC with new dungeons? Wishful thinking.

I wont even bother to attempt multi player yet from what ive read plenty of bugs spoil the online play, lan though seems to be working okay.

Haven't kept up but isn't 4th Edition dumbed down for video games.
I'll always have a soft spot for 3rd and 3.5 Editions.

They say it isn't but is does very much feel like it. I started playing with AD&D but stopped not long after 2e appeared due to other interests. I don't play at all any more but maintain an extensive library of D&D (and other RPGs,) because I still get a buzz out of reading them. I was a big Forgotten Realms fan, and Planescape and Dark Sun as well (although I never got to play either of the last too...Maybe if I luck into a new circle of aging dorks...).

I like 3e as well, and the Pathfinder rules (the natural successor) but 4e just seems....I dunno. Maybe if I was 11 or 12 again it would seem like the greatest thing ever. They claim they streamlined it to make it easier for noobs to follow but here's the kicker: the 12 year old me, and my friends, never seemed to have any problems following the rules of AD&D. Maybe we were smarter but I doubt it. Maybe we just had more willingness to learn something that we didn't immediately understand - I don't know. I do know that the current edition wars have been going on for two years now and make the fundamentalist fighting you get on sim sites looks like old ladies arguing about who gets to pay the bill. Hell hath no fury like a dork scorned.

Another reason I dislike 4e, aside from a lot of the rule changes, stupid assumptions the designers make about players, the fact it's now virtually a game centered around minis and combat, and it's crappy new magic system: the books themselves look cheap and badly designed. They actually look like manuals from a third rate CRPG.

Ah well, I'll always have AD&D and 2e and unless Wizbro instigate a policy of demanding all old books are returned to them for pulping (something I wouldn't put past them,) I always will.

That's a rather ironic criticism any D&D edition, considering the game's roots. Ever heard of Chainmail?

True enough - although D&D isn't Chainmail, and for the first two editions, in particular, minis weren't considered something essential. Yes, players used them for things like working out party order etc, etc but they weren't vital for determining combat. with 3e, the use of minis - while still optional - became of more importance and now we have the system where they are very important for combat resolution.

D&D players always liked their shiny little men - I've got an angry looking mountain orc and a shield dwarf watching me as I write this - but they weren't actually integral until 4e.

The use of minis isn't really a criticism I don't think anyway, it's really just the emphasis that has changed.

I was a much bigger fan and player of Battletech. And have a Raven, Shadow Hawk, Mad Cat, Vulture, Awesome, and an Atlas, on my dresser. My woman thinks its kinda creepy I still have them.

6 miniatures constitutes creepy now? I have around 30 standing on my shelf, not counting the rest I have...somewhere. Actually, I should probably get some new ones. Definitely needs WarShips...also moar Fafnirs...and Eisensturms...maybe a dozen or so Elementals too...

BattleTech isn't really an RPG, though, at least by itself. The last tabletop RPG I played was D&D...3rd Edition, I believe, and that was several years ago. I have a bunch of RPGs around which I have never managed to get around to playing, however; I really have to get some people to play them. My favourites will probably have to be GDW's Twilight: 2000 and Space: 1889, which are really nice. It's just a shame that the former got the Soviet-removal treatment in its latest edition...

Battletech does have a tabletop rpg though, I have played the third edition myself. Also right now play a game of AD&D 3.5 with one group, awesomely fun stuff.

Memories..
I had almost all of the minitures (made by Ral Partha) for BattleTech back in the day. All custom painted and even functioning search lights in my Warhammer Mechs. My favorite mech was a modified Centurion, almost similiar to Yen-Lo-Wang.

I loved playing Twilight 2K (we even kept playing via webcam when I moved the US) and really like Dark Conspiracy, even tho that may not everyones favorite.

As a gamemaster myself, I hosted DnD, Traveler:TNE, Twilight:2k and some other stuff.

One I've got and never had the opportunity to play is Aces and Eights which is set in the old west. The rule book is beautiful but the rules are pretty complex. It has the coolest character creation system I've seen in a game. Maybe some day...

I'm also itching to play a decent Dark Sun campaign. Not much chance of that happening either.

Forget about Daggerdale I came across a gem today went to the warehouse here and spotted - 'Drakensang The River of Time' cRPG not actually D&D rules yet guaranteed to make any rpger drool.

Ive just started the game so can't say much than its a German made game 2009, english voice overs are a bit cheesy but bearable. Graphics are well done what looks like to be a large game world to roam around in. Combat is what to expect think of NWN1. Up to 4 members allowed in your group. Game came with no manual not even a pdf on the dvd so had to go look for one online. Average online scores 8/10

I chose a Tribal Warrior, but cause there is so many to choose from I might be restarting a few times until im happy with the character I want to play.
