Communal bins 'could replace doorstep collections'

Looks like we in the UK may be getting so called "communal bins" as used in mainland Europe. So any thoughts? Good/bad idea? Would like to hear from those in mainland Europe sharing their thoughts on them.

Do you mean those ECO-islands, when there's an area where a couple of bins are placed to drop of recyclable material, one for glass, one for plastic...
or do you mean when you no longer have a bin infront of the house which is picked up once a week and a communal is where the entire block/neighbourhood drops all of their garbage in

The 2nd ones, its been discussed on Radio 2 currently, and to no-ones surprise many are against them - thats Brits for you.

Not really, cant think where the council will put them where I live, plus what we got works.

@Betonov - The second one.

I read this in a sunday paper, I think it's a crap idea. A large bin outside some poor sucker's house, with a heavy lid being banged at all hours, or not lifted at all by some frail old lady who can barely cope with the current wheely bins.

I like the current arrangment with my local council, black bin for normal household waste one week, and a larger blue one for all recycling, and a green one for garden waste the next week. Except in winter when the green bin only gets collected once a month as we don't cut the grass!

Even better, the mileage behind the green bin is minimal - it gets taken to a composting site in the next village about 4 miles away.

As I said, the overly large bin outside anyone's house is a crap idea.

Where I live we have a good system for rubbish collection: Black bin for general waste, Green lid bin for cardboard/garden waste and a Green box for tins/glass jars/magazines etc. Bins are collected on alternating weeks and the rest goes into the 2 compost bins in the back garden.

The sucker who has this new bin outside their place could have it there as punishment for anti-social behaviour etc.

We had this system until 1998. now it's one bin for one house/block. Once a week pick-up. And an ECO island for every 3 villages for recycling. Can't help you there

What a load of bollocks dont they give toss about elderly\disabled people who might have ump their rubbish 150 yards or more

huh, city & town councils are like Government-lite™ - all the bull**** but without any of the despotic functionality guaranteed by professional bureaucrats.

Recently we have had to remove out wheelie bins from the street in case some one has an accident with one or something. £110.00 fines otherwise. oooooooh

Communal bins are already used in mainland Europe, where proponents of the scheme claim they lead to tidier streets, as birds and foxes cannot rip open the bags.

Wtf? There is a device which prevents animals from ripping the bags: it's called a bin

In my city it is like this: small houses usually have the bins in the front or in the inner cities in the cellar, medium sized flats have bigger containers for several houses, but they are not far away, 20,30 metres, large flats have rubbish chutes on the floors and the trash is collected in large containers.

These "communal bins" are usually only for recycable stuff like glass, paper, clothes.

I like the phrase "Government-lite™"
Here they are also professional bureaucrats with all the joy and "service" one can expect. And yes, the German bureaucracy is as bad as the cliché is.

Some years they privatized the rubbish collection here. Of course the service went down and the prices went up... who would have thought so...
