Libya Apache deployment approved by David Cameron

The UK is sending four Apache attack helicopters to the mission in Libya, after approval by the prime minister.

If called upon, they will allow for swifter attacks on a wider range of smaller targets in urban areas.

The Apache helicopters, normally based at Wattisham, in Suffolk, are expected to go into operation within days.

Downing Street says intelligence suggests Col Muammar Gaddafi is "on the run" and hiding in Tripoli hospitals in the belief he will be safe there.

The Apache helicopters and their pilots, who are part of the Army Air Corps, are currently on exercise in the Mediterranean.

How, from where will they operate: ships? The French at least send their choppers together with an helicopter carrier.
For the AH64D, an operational range of 407 km gets listed by Wikipedia.

Probably the most fearsome looking attack helicopter ever built. Are the british Apache's the Longbow model or the standard variant?

The AgustaWestland Apache is a license built version of the Longbow I believe. We've got eight US built Apaches and the rest are built in the UK under license. We put a Rolls Royce engine in her which increased her output a bit, and I believe she can also fire the CRV7 rocket which gives her some punch. We've got Hellfires as well, although it took a while to get the Hellfire to talk to the Helo.

I live about...thirty miles from Wattisham and they bring the WAH-64 over fairly often, it's a beautiful sight. Particularly on a low pass, two of them put on a show the other week...low enough to see the gun moving around.

Oh, and a bit of Apache image spam from me too, because it is a brilliant helo.

It is, the bold part sounds like another US-built aircraft.

I've got some lovely shots of one at Boscombe Down when I was photographing some CO's Cup Rugby, I'll see if I can find them and scan-to-spam them.

Apache helicopters have only just learnt about life on HMS Ocean, how convenient.
