Default Forward thinking, backward thinking or...

just a screwing:

Mn/DOT anticipates a fee on road usage might someday be necessary as more fuel efficient and hybrid cars are on the road, decreasing revenue from the gas tax.

That's quite a sideways story

I guess the number of cars on the road isn't going down, so they still need the same upkeep.

I foresee a mileage usage tax on ALL vehicles. Personally I think this is a precursor to just that.

It won't be long before every internet transaction will be taxed.

It seems to me the government looks to tax and charge everything they can. Hell, I pay $6.00 a year just to permit my 7 pound poodle.

I get charged $14.00 for a state worker to tell me my "check engine" light is off and my car must be running clean emission as a result of the light being off.

Yeah, we have that at home, a combination of fuel and road taxes. Your road tax can be heavily reduced by driving low-emission-type vehicles. Petrol taxes we all gotta pay

EDIT - Bah, just missed 4444 posts. I like those little moments :P

Here's the thing, once tax revenue starts to diminish on a particular item such as gas, alcohol and tobacco...what will be taxed to keep on pace with current government expenditures? Diaper tax? The old Window tax? Let's face it, all our vices get taxed. Now, I quit smoking. That tax that was incorporated into the total cost of the pack of cigarettes is now gone since I quit. How is that loss of revenue regained? Let's tax for mileage usage, blades of grass in your yard or anything else that a twist can be put on to justify the tax.

Sounds like they know what they're talking about, so all in all $14 (for an expert opinion) is a real bargain.
