Shopping Centre shooting in the Netherlands, 6 dead

At least six people have been shot dead in a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn by a gunman who sprayed passersby with an automatic weapon.

Tragic, I guess I'll never understand these fokes that shoot people then end their lives....why can't they skip to the latter.

I remember each time when something like this has happened and it has been committed with a pistol (usually), someone has said we're lucky the shooter didn't have anything bigger. But apparently this guy did have, unless by "automatic weapon" they mean an automatic pistol. The ever reliable Finnish media says that according to one of the witnesses the shooter had "a machinegun". Now "machinegun" in our journalists' dictionary (for some reason they all seem to use the same one) can mean pretty much anything from a submachinegun to an assault rifle, but it implies it was something bigger.

Troubling nevertheless. I don't know if these cases have become more common than before, but I sure hope the trend is not going towards more and more destructive weaponry. Then again, I'm surprised these loonies so often seem to go for mere pistols instead of for example making a homemade bomb. Good for the rest of us I guess.

Let's hope at least the injured will get well.

Police agencies are heightened to bomb making materials these days. Start purchasing them and you have a more than reasonable chance of getting armed police giving you a friendly wake-up call at 4am.
Guns on the other hand are a lot easier to get. If not imported then they're stolen to order from people with gun licenses. It was in the news over here the other day how much thefts of guns from those with gun licenses has gone up over the past few years.
It's not easy to stop it, no one has managed to so far and I doubt they will.
RIP to those shot by this lunatic.

Exactly, If a person chooses to end their life great. I free that everyone should have that right. But why take others with you.

There must be some strange level of hatred that would motivate someone to kill someone and then kill themselves. What exactly does the murder benefit from the murder if they intend on suicide?

I just don't understand it.

Can't say it better myself. I guess in their rage at the world it never occurs to these mental midgets that these people they direct their last hurrah of fury on are probably not living carefree lives either. I think they see a black & white world where everyone else is happy & content at their expense and therefore must be punished before they make their exit.

Well so much for my wishes: the death toll is now seven. They have also identified the shooter as well as found some notes he left.

Back when we had a school shooting here in 2007, the shooter also left some notes and at least for a while they circulated in the internet too. I had the questionable honor to read them and as bizarre as they were, they did give some insight on how at least that particular lunatic thought. Or didn't think, as it seemed to be, as that ranting didn't make any sense at all. But as far as I remember, it was very much the "this is your own fault" logic he used to justify his rampage.
