SH5 Wolfpacks

Hi I have been playing SH5 for a while now and i was wondering about this. usually i just go and attack a convoy on my own but now i want to get the rest of the wolfpack involved. it says send contact reports in the area that the wolfpacks operate and they will join the battle. well, firstly, where do the wolfpacks operate and how long does it take for them to get here when you do send a contact report. any clarification would be a great help thanks.

Check out this forum thread:

Here's another thread with a description of an in-game wolf pack in action:

Happy hunting!

Dude...you made me laugh...
Now seriously, why do you spread lies about not existing wolfpacks in game ?
Here's my first encounter In Western Aproaches campaign with a wolfpack:

As you can see they EVEN appear as "convoy" on the map in blue ! When you hover the mouse over it look what it says

I discovered this wolfpack (there were 5 Type VIIC subs) when I was getting back to base to refit. When you're submerged they appear as blue lines like any warship, that's how I discovered them, wondering what warships were ...

Also check this part of the developer team interview about how wolfpack actually work in Silent Hunter 5 :

http://www.subsim.com/ssr/sh5/preview_sh5_jan2010B.php

Cry wolfpack
Subsim: Now its time for the dreaded 'W' word: wolfpacks. This is something everyone's been talking about since Silent Hunter 3, and we had this idea that maybe Ubisoft would release an expansion to Silent Hunter 3 with wolfpacks.

Dan: We definitely have AI U-boats in the game. The level of interaction with them right now is limited, but there is a role for them in the campaign, so basically they will help the player accomplish his goals, but that is all I can say about it right now.

Subsim: Will there be shadowing objectives? Where the player gets a command from BdU to go in a certain grid, to look for a convoy and shadow it, staying in contact but not attack? And of course the objective is, the gameplay element is that the player has to stay close enough to not lose the convoy but not so close that the escorts detect him and drive him under and he can't maintain contact. Is anything like that gonna be in the campaign?

Dan: Right now, it looks unlikely that we will have shadowing convoys in the game. As in, having a very special mission for the players, but actually it'll kinda work this way in the game: If the player shadows and keeps contact with the convoy, then wolfpacks will actually attack the convoy, too. There won't be as much interaction with BdU as opposed to reality.

Subsim: So, that's a more self-enforced thing, if he wants to do a shadowing objective, he'll just have to do it on his own, the game won't reward him or penalize him if he doesn't do it well.

Dan: The player doesn't have much direct interaction with the wolfpacks, with the AI boats, but if he keeps shadowing convoys and keeping contact with the convoys in the area that the wolfpacks operate, then the AI boats will also join the battle. The wolfpack will have an operational area and if you shadow convoys in that area, the wolfpacks will be able to react.

Subsim: That does sound like there is going to be a wolfpack type battle that wasn't in Silent Hunter 3 at all, that if a player reports a convoy, that AI U-boats may show up and attack, so a player might actually see a ship torpedoed by a wolfpack U-boat.

Dan: Yeah.

That's nice, but why are you just now responding directly to something somebody said five months ago?

It's simplier than you may think: I saw the thread just ...today looking for something...

I can understand that. It's not bringing back the thread, it's the responding to the comment as if it was just barely written that's jarring.

Well if you pay attention to what that dude wrote to the other one...he was CLEAR: "you've been lied , there are no...wolfpacks in game" so that qualifies it not only as a LIE, a straight one, but also as something wicked. So I'd say I was gently ...ENOUGH with my answer. I hope you finally got it know.
But if you are here just to pick a fight you won't get it from me. This is the end of ...discution. For me at least.

No, I'm not looking for a fight, and I can understand your anger at his post.

I just have this thing about unannounced necro threads. I apologise.

Please don't get me wrong, I am not anger at all. I just didn't understand why he misslead that fellow who really was looking for an answer. Maybe I missjudged him (or maybe not) and he doesn't have a clue that wolfpack are implemented in the game. In that case it's obvious he didn't make it on porpose. Because it's stupid to mock people who are seeking for help. This forums is made keeping in mind the idea of HELPING people.
And about necro threads get over it, it is common to meet those situations, because people come and go for long periods of time or others are new to the forum, etc.

PS- no need for apologies, there is no harm done.I'm glad that you understand me. See you around.

I don't blame you for that. You're right, he shouldn't have made fun of a guy looking for help.

No can do. Well, sort of. As I said, it's not the bringing up an old thread. People do that all the time. Usually they say they're doing it and why. As I said, the only part that bugs me is answering an old post as if it was yesterday. To me it's kind of like meeting someone for the first time and yelling at him because of something he said to someone else months (or sometimes years) ago.

Anyway, that's just me.

Both of you are making good points

But I suppose that maybe the time & date stamp
was blurred out by the annoyance of reading an incorrect &
mocking post in this thread.

I too think there is nothing wrong with bringing back old threads.
Sometimes there is valuable information within them.

On some threads however the information is old and brings back confusion.
Often there are newer threads on the same topic that have the correct information.

Well, it is a problem. Because at that time not much of us encountered a wolfpack. And thats just because they become active only in the latest campaigns, like Black Pit and Black May. I encountered the first pack only in 43 playin BM.

Since then wolfpacks are something usual, now we know that they respond to distress calls when they are close enough etc. But at that time, when this topic was created, was a different situation and not many of us saw yet any pack in the game. Thats why digging out necro threads is not the best choice.
