Default IFF? Radar Ctrl key and advice on raiding Tokyo

All hands report to the bridge..

Fellas, I'm currently on the outskirts of Tokyo bay, pending entrance to port Tokyo. I will ask you to try holding down the Ctrl key while looking at the PPI radar (not the heart beat radar), and you'll note a smiley comes up.

This happened on my current position and I'm scared it could be either:

1- a neutral unit, but unlikely since men ID it as warship, or,
2- Smiley means he still hasnt detected me,
3- or???

Any ideas?

And is this the SJ-I IFF (Identify Friend or Foe) feature?

The second part of this post, is me asking for your advice on raiding Tokyo port.

In calculating path to within, I count 88 Km to 11 Km from hardpoints on port. Any advice on speed, depths, and courses. I plotted marks on my selection of waypoints, sticking to depths and avoiding contact. Problem is, battery lasts 37 Km, which means I have to surface and recharge in 51 Km to destination, risking shore batteries plummeting me and putting holes to my boat. I will go at TC = 1 (normal TC) all the way to start point, and I happen to have about 14 electric eels and 2 Mark 14s fore reserves, 8 Mark 14s aft. I will use the electric on warships such as DDs as a last resort but will stick to being silent and slow. Once I dive I'll engage SR and stay that way till I get out.

Still, any of you who made it in and most importantly, out, could help me with this.

Thanks

The first part i can help you with. It looks like the "radar smiling contacts" easter egg made by NvDrifter i believe. This little mod, if you want to use it, eliminates them and reduces the large size of the contacts in the radar cathode tube screen as well. With this installed you can clear see how much ships are into a large convoy.
Small Radar Contacts Mod can be found here. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...p?do=file&id=9

If I remember correctly from the early days, the easter egg was in the stock version of the game.

ok, forget about the smiley thing, apparently ubi had a lot of spare time to put smileys on American subs PPI screens than to make a decent end product .

And I got good news for you fellas, I went in, all the way to Tokyo, but didnt find any capital ships, apart from a Maya heavy cruiser and a Takao heavy cruiser, both of which werent at Tokyo, but in the first port you find to your left where you bypass the lighthouse ledge, Yokosuka. Of course I could be wrong afterwards, and I'll have to go there again. Anyways, as expected, my battery lasted exactly short of Tokyo, so I waited at a nearby deep puddle for the sun to go out, surfaced at night and continued till I was shocked to find no carriers around. So, I doubled back to Yokosuka, hit the two of these HCs and got out. I will try to camp on the entry to this area, you know, where merchants and warships pass through. I did as told, saved electric eels for warships and steam eels for static ships.

Oh where are my manners:

But in the midst of all this, my laptop didnt CTD like last time. Maybe because I didnt spam tc. I just never crossed 128 on wait or 32 on the move. Happy trials everyone.

One more thing, is there a mod for PPI which puts more bearings on the dial? sometimes, you cant tell except by going back and forth through radar-hydrophone, which is time consuming if you will.

well, I dont think theres a reason why not to go there again... I mean you could practically lurk on the entrances and listen to the screws, you know the screws of a carrier (the one screw you havent heard in the whole game)... And when the big flat top arrives, you serve her cold to Davy Jones locker.

Speaking of IFF, I just got the "Radar Countermeasures" and was wondering if anyone knows how I can access it in TMO.

Tokyo bay, is a favorite raiding place for me. Whenever I want to sink a good size Capital ship, there is where I go.

Here is my experience.

From mark #3 to Marks 4 & 5, you can run these during the day submerged at 70 to 90 ft. You never want to run these points on the surface, otherwise the shore batteries will make it a cery short trip.

If you reach point #5 early in the war, then you'll most likely on find the two heavy cruisers you mentioned.

However, if you raid the harbor once you get the Gato class boat, at point #5 you will run up on either a stationary Kongo class BB or a Ise Class BB along with its escort.

Sink the BB, its escort, and the two heavy cruisers and you have a heafty total of around 55,000 tons.

Here is decision time.

To the north, there is usually nothing more than merchants docked.

You can, at night, surface, turn north and order ahead full, to recharge your batteries.

At Kawasaki, there are 5-6 merchants and usually one (1) ISJ Jap sub. But it has been my misfortune that I have put as many as 6 "fish" into a docked sub and it never sink. (You may have better luck than I did)

Otherwise, Tokyo is nothing more than a place for merchants.

If it is still dark, and there are no tug boats around, you can sit still at point#8 till your batteries recharge and dive to spend the day under water away from the Jap air patrols.

Otherwise, from Yokisuka, after sinking the afore named ships there, just back track under water at 70-90 ft until you reach point #3.

This can be done completely underwater. It takes your batteries way down, but it can be done.

Wait at point #3 until dark, surface and run like hell.

Successful raid.

Thanks dude! read the above post just before yours. I did raid it and luckily the boat survived. I didnt want to since my laptop CTD before because I exceeded tc. Rabaul has nothing at November 1943.

Is Truk on the stock map? I cant find it in the in-game map

The island of Truk is indeed on the stock map, but it isn't labeled and there is never anything there. The devs just didn't put anything in for it.

Now I'm playing TMO 2.0.

During the early part of the war, 1941 onwards, there is indeed not much at Rabaul, however, every once in a while a convoy comes along.

I seem to remember that once in TMO 1.4, once I got the Gato Class boat, I made a trip to Rabaul and inside the harbor was two fleet class carriers. But not since playing TMO 2.0 have I had that luck.

Now from late 1942, August to be exact, about once every week a fleet of about six DD's come out of Rabaul heading towards Guadalcanal.

I have submerged on the east side of the mouth leading south from Rabaul to intercept these. You can attack during the day, but I seem to have better luck attacking at night.

From about June, July, or August of '43, once the Japs move their airbase from Rabaul to Wewak, you will catch convoys and task forces heading in to and out of Rabaul. Heading in from the north from Truk, or heading in from the west. And usually more convoys head out west from Rabaul than they do to the north towards Truk.

But, I can't stress this enough, in TMO 2.0, the Jap air patrols will nail you. They are twice as acurate in TMO 2.0 as in the stock version or TMO 1.4.

Dive to 180 or 220 feet when radar pick them up heading your way.

One more piece of advice.

If your playing the stock version, when you receive the Balao class sub, after 1943 when the Japs retreat from Rabaul, you can make a trek to Truk. If your lucky enough to penetrate the harbor, you may find a whole fleet anchored in the harbor. Truk is roughly 600 miles due north of Rabaul.

However, if your playing TMO 1.5 or higher, I suggest you avoid Truk altogether.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Date Patrol End: 11-2-43, Tonnage sunk: 148,430.

The 3 DD's, were sunk coming out of Rabaul heading SSE towards Guadalcanal.

After sunking these three, I dove to 400' and turned north.

I waiting for a day and a half at the entrance to Rabul for this Task Force to come along. (Truth is, I was about to head back south)

Good things can come if you wait.

In case you haven't found out, which I'm sure you have, to install the APR-1, in the blocks for adding radar you should find an arrow you can scroll down with and find extra spaces for installing added equipment.

It does come in handy, better with the radar fix by tater, but it'll show you what ships have radar so try to plot as far from them as you can. One thing that helps is going decks awash with engines running, this will put you lower, as the radar has a height setting..lower in the water is better. I can still pull off 12 kts on the surface this way. If the capital ship vectors in escorts by radar, I'll go down a few feet to cut the electrics on, that way the game see's you as submerged and often they lose contact, just haul arse if they keep coming. The good thing is you can use it to your advantage, if you get far enough away the escorts will search where they last had you leaving a flank wide open for you to attack the group. Need to get about 3000 yards away from where they come to search or they may get you, so keep on the speed.
