Default Realistic Water Clarity?

I'm really trying to get the feel of what a real U-boat commander experienced in the war. (Minus the realistic career length).

I've recently read on the forums that the water clarity in GWX and vanilla SH3 are unrealistic.

So for SH3 commander, what is the "realistic" setting for water clarity? 5? 9? 16?

It's odd... in GWX3's manual had an article detailing a harbor attack. It said that you couldn't see sea-mines regardless of depth or periscope... said that the only way to find a sea-mine is to get blown up by one. I saw a sea-mine rather clearly and was able to adjust my course so that I didn't run into it.

I don't want to see just black when I use the periscope underwater, but I don't want to "cheat" with unrealistic water clarityeither... can anyone suggest a realistic setting?

Water Clarity is 18 in SH3 Commander by default, which can be changed

I know, but is 18 a realistic setting? I can see pretty clearly underwater and supposedly, that wasn't the case for real U-boats.

I set mine for 3. Crappy for screenshots, but when people post about using the periscope to see and dodge depth charges I grind my teeth. I like use external and watch the boat come out of nowhere. With it set for 3 I can be at the bow and barely make out the conning tower. External view itself is unrealistic, but we all love it, and that setting just feels right to me.

The water clarity would be dependant on a number of factors, depth, light conditions, area etc.

Observing mines through the periscope is definitely unrealistic....a Kaleun would be lucky if he could make out the bow of his boat whilst submerged.

As already stated, tweak the clarity via SH3 Commander to something you consider most appropriate.

There are some old UBoot reels from the KM, where they mounted a cam on the outside, and submerged the boat. Give a a good example how things looked submerged!

As stated - water clarity is a complex matter. It is highly dependent on water salinity, temperature, wave action (near the surface) and a host of other variables. It can be as lousy as in a river delta, where all the runoff from the land can actually turn the water brown, to the renowned clarity in the Caribbean tourist spots where you can see the reefs fifty feet below. So ..... as stated, trial and error to what YOU think is right for the area/time of year/etc you are in.

In SH3, water clarity depends also of environment mod used. Try diverse environments mods (OLCE, MEP. Thompsen waters, LSH3 environment, etc.). The MEP 3 20K is clear under water.

Regards and Merry Christmas.

Sorry, I just want to make sure before I screw around with my modded SH3, the electronic equivalent of a house of cards... I want to ask... this mod will make water clarity realistic and varied?

Now I´m watching the new Environment mod by Hans Witteman:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=174889

It seems the best env for SH3. Now, the best envs are MEP 3 and SH5 Water for SH3. I like the ATM submod in LSH3 5.1. It is a very clear water undersea.

Regards.

Hi fitzcarraldo,

what makes you saying that the mod of Hans Witteman will be the best environment mod for SH3?! Did you or anyone else see one single screenshot of this "supermod"?

Best regards, MCHALO12.

Around 20 meters should be realistic. Dunno which setting would correspond. Steve´s 3 sounds close or maybe a tad to high.
