It Happened Today: JFK Elected President
On Nov. 8, 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected president of the U.S., defeating Richard Nixon in one of the closest elections of the 20th century. Pictured: Kennedy on the campaign trail, Sept. 1960.

For some it was very signifcant.
I was amazed yesterday I found that my daughter was watching a History Channel program with the subject of the Kennedy assassination. She is only in 10th grade. ![]()

It was not really hero worship. He was young and inspiring. A war vet who single handed swam 3 miles with a shipmate who was badly burned in tow. He successfully found rescue for all but 2 of crewmates when PT 109 was sunk. To survive such an ordeal only to be assassinated for no good reason does make one stop and ponder the short lived live of this particular person.

While I think he's way over-hyped, he certainly was an interesting character, and probably the last Democrat President (or even Dem candidate for Pres) that I have any significant overlap with politically.

Very much overhyped like all the Kennedy family.Truth be told their father was a drug dealer of his day in addition to being pro Nazi.JFK was a war hero, give him that and prob a good man but very much overrated, kind of like the current occupant of the WH was during his campaign and is by some of the stubborn hold outs among us.
I admire him mostly for trying to really change things, take down the old guard, which lead to his murder.I agree with Tater he was the last real Democrat to even run for President. |

I am no conspiracy nut, in fact I usually dismiss them. but I believe people who actually think Oswald was just a lone nut who took him out are in denial, just don't want to admit that would happen in the US, kind of a "not in my backyard" kind of thing.Soooo many things do not match up with the official story.I personally believe a lot of the evidence points at Alan Dulles via CIA operative New Orelans "businessman" Clay Shaw.Oswald thought he was part of a group plan to take out Kennedy but ended up as he said "just a patsy" then was silenced by Ruby.I did first become aware of this via the Oliver Stone(who I dislike, very much) movie JFK but done a lot of research since and he was correct on this one.I too, as the house comittee found years later, a "probable conspiracy" in the assassination of JFK.They had access to much more info than I did of course but I was able to see. This pride driven "not in my backyard" thing is common in America, blinds people to seeing the truth. One big issue now, much of the evidence is there but people just can't fathom it'd happen in America.Guess what it is? lol. |

I'm certain there was more than one gunman on a grassy knoll.

I admired the man for his war record and gave deepest sympathy for the terrible way he met his end.
My understanding of American politics is a long way from being my strongest point knowledge wise but in this instance I believe the OP is little more than another example of 'cut and paste'. |

Not as much now as just after the assassination. No one had him on his top 3 list when we debated the best U.S. presidents a while back.
