Default Mod to make boat more vulnerable?

Is there a mod that makes the boat more vulnerable on the surface? For those of you that are familiar with SH4, something along the lines of real fleet boat's sub damage model where any direct hit from a gun 3" or larger is catastrophic. While playing with that mod if i am discovered while conducting a night surface attack i find myself literally holding my breath as i order a crash dive while shells fall around my boat knowing a direct hit will end my career. I was even sunk once by a lucky shot from a large tanker's deck gun while I tried to finish him of on the surface with my gun. Realistic repair times mod somewhat does what i want but i find i can still take many direct hits and still get away although it takes longer to repair damage. In real fleet boat I don't dare duke it out on the surface with a patrol craft or aircraft, as it should be. Also if there is not a mod like this can anybody with modding experience clue me in to how i may tweak the files myself? Any ideas? I know I could pretend and make my own rules on attacking on the surface but this is not quite as fun.

There is Mod called "Enhanced Damage Effect".

It should come with the GWX gold package.

I hope this is what you are looking for. I'm not subsequently sure where to download it because I got it when I installed the GWX3.0, but I'm sure you should have no difficulty in finding it.

Good Hunting...

Enhanced Damage Effects
This option adds several effects intended to better simulate the effects on surface ships of hits by bombs, gunfire, and torpedoes, including:
• Oil slicks and trails
• Large oil slicks and oil trails in the path of damaged ships, especially tankers
• Oil slick color is now less violet-colored and closer to the real color of oil
• Fires and Explosions
• Reduced some of the impact of fires on display FPS rate compared to stock Silent Hunter III
• Corrected stock Silent Hunter III bugs with catastrophic aircraft explosions, small fires, and depth charge detonations
• More splinters in explosions with splinters, and more explosions with splinters in general
• Large secondary explosions
• Improved fire and smoke effects
• More below-water explosion effects and bubbles as ships sink
• Sound effects
• All fires now have sound effects
• You can hear fires in large damaged ships through hydrophones in some conditions
• Added and adjusted new sound effects for explosions
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess the "Enhanced Damage Effects"-Mod only affects the surface ships, not the Uboats.
I use this mod for myself and I don't noticed any changes on my own uboats so far, but I am a very careful KaLeu, so it could be that I never got enough damage to "trigger" the enhanced effects
I strongly recommend this mod anyway

Correct, it has to do with the visual/audio representation of damage done to other ships, for instance that tanker you just slammed a torpedo into, and the ongoing effects of same (explosions, oil slicks, fire, etc.).

It doesn't affect the damage model of your own boat.

Aye that...if you want to make your boat more susceptible to damage you will have to alter the zon files in the model itself....pretty complex operation.

I guess there is no mod like that then. I am pretty sure I am going to screw it up if I try it myself, but maybe I'll get lucky through trial and error. Thanks for the replies.

Adjusting the zon stuff is nearly an art!
It is also personnal 'what I like' stuff.
You will only learn by doing, so go for it Mate!

You can always delete the bad file.

It's not like welding the Gas Grill to the hood of the Wife's car.
(Bad idea. BAD! BAD!)
You CAN'T delete the weld marks on the Wife's car.

It seems the hardest part would be how to make the boat more vulnerable on the surface without making it more vulnerable underwater. I think the underwater damage is about right as it stands. I don't want to make the boat get sunk by one depth charge or something like that. Also I would have to get it to recognize damage from different weapons, so the boat won't be sunk by many hits from small arms fire or something like that, that shouldn't breach the pressure hull. Otherwise, it could be as easy as lowering the boats hit points.

The 3"-5" guns that are mounted on the escorts and eventually some merchants do some pretty massive damage. Their accuracy is rather poor so luckily you only get hit by a few shells.

As pointed out many times by several retired sailors, the larger ships would never waste the bigger munitions on a u-boat. Something small like a DD designed for ASW would open up with anything its got, while a heavy cruiser wouldn't fire any of its main batteries only possibly its smaller ones if there wasn't anything else around (like a DD, trawler or even sqwall). Firing an entire broadside of twelve to sixteen 12"-15" guns at a single u-boat would've likely gotten the captain in hot water. Unless the target was confirmed to be a priority (such as being possitively identified as Prien or Kretshcmer's boat) justifying such a large monetary expendeture on the target would have been difficult at best.

Alternatively, would it be a simpler task to increase the hitting power of those smaller ship guns?

There you go:

Look for WAC's Realistic Hull Damage

From the readme:

This addon decreases the power of the subs hull to realistic values, so that it is more vulnerable.

Thanks NewCaptain I tested out that mod on my setup and it does exactly what I wanted(so far on the surface, still have to test it underwater). One good hit by a 3" or 5" shell starts flooding, two hits deep sixed my boat. Surprisingly there were no conflicts with GWX so far. So it does make me do what a real commander would have done, avoid surface engagements entirely unless you're finishing off an unarmed merchant. To me withstanding 10 or 15 shells and still putting up a fight was totally unrealistic.

No problem. I've been using it for a while on a GWX install and didn't find any problems so far.

Couple this mod with one of those longer repair time mods and a DiD career and you'll starting being much more careful before engaging targets.

Do you want the boat to take more damage or just make it appear more damaged by the models?

If you use Silent 3ditor, you can edit silenthunter3/data/submarine/thesubyouwanttomod/thesub.zon

Once you have Silent 3ditor open with this file, click 'colisionableobject' to expand it, then click 'colisionableobject' to highlight it. Then on your right side you will see some variable's to play with, one being Armor and adjusting that is the best way to adjust how much damage you take.

Did a little testing underwater. Seems to do what I want there also. You get your clock cleaned on the surface but the boat is still tough enough to take a good old fashioned shellacking by depth charges. Can't wait to see more results from this mod. With GWX's awesome mod it helps makes for very interesting play. Thanks again. And thanks to whomever created them.
